Is there a way to convert/switch Local Files into Streamed Music?

Is there a way to convert/switch Local Files into Streamed Music?

I'm new to Spotify, and luckily there was a way to transfer my Youtube Playlists into Spotify (well, not all of them songs, of course).

Today I discovered you can Import Playlists from iTunes, but I found out that the Local Files thing is a mess (why would some artists have a full profile when they're not even on Spotify?, but that's another matter).

I noticed that the only way to play this songs (and share the Playlists with friends) is just available via my computer; mobiles won't recognize a darn song.

I hope I don't have to search for each song individually

Spotify won't actually share local songs that aren't part of the Spotify library across different accounts. It is possible to share files that you add to playlists with other devices on your account.

For example, if you want to add songs from your PC to your phone you just need to:

  • make a new playlist
  • add songs from your "Local Files" to the playlist
  • from your mobile device make the playlist "Available Offline"

As long as the computer and the mobile device are on the same wifi network (and Spotify has been given permission by your Firewall) the songs will automatically transfer between the devices and you will be able to listen to those songs on your phone no matter where you are.

Because these songs don't actually transfer over the Internet, it's not possible to share MP3s with friends or others who follow your playlists through Spotify. If you were to transfer the MP3s to your friends using other means, they can then add it to their local files which would make it available on shared playlists through the same manner described above.

Spotify just isn't capable of acting as a P2P network to accommodate that for you.

Hope that helps!

Oh no no, I meant something like "hey Spotify, would you check the available songs in your database and convert this Local Files to regular files?, thanks".

I'm guessing tis still not possible

I apologize, I understand what you're looking for now.

Basically what you would like is for Spotify to compare the tracks on a playlist from other programs, such as iTunes, and determine which titles are available directly from Spotify so that it doesn't have to reference the local file any longer.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that's a feature Spotify is capable of.

In order for a program to do this, the tags on your local file would have to match the tags on a Spotify file almost exactly. Otherwise, it is impossible for Spotify to automatically tell if the file referenced in your playlist is the song it thinks it has, or if the title is just something similar.

I use Plex Media Server to organize a lot of my media files. Plex will look at the title of my video and based off of that it tries to give me information such as the box art for the video as well as a movie synopsis. Most of the time it fails completely. It gets really aggravating when I have a video called "Close Encounters" and Plex tells me I have "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", or the one that really annoys me is it tells me I have the 1987 movie "Wanted: Dead or Alive" when what I actually have is a documentary series on hunting elephants by the same title.

So, unfortunately, these programs just aren't smart enough to know exactly which song you have or if it or isn't the song it thinks it might be.

Good luck with the playlists!

I just asked myself the same question: I want to scan my local files (mostly old CD rips), see which ones are available in Spotify, add the Spotify version to a playlist and delete the local file AND throw away the old CD's 😄 I think it should be possible to scan a media file and recognise it by it's title, metadata and sound recognition 'a la soundhound'...

I found a "solution" some months ago while trying to curate some Playlists, unfortunately if the song is not available in Spotify then it'll be invisible.

The only thing you have to do is create a new Playlist, and select all the imported music and drag it into the new playlist; or copy-paste.
That worked for me, and cleared the non-available songs.
