Is there any way to hide the see what your friends are playing bar?

It takes up so much space and I don't want to use it

It seems you have to go into the View menu now. There's an option to hide that panel.

The latest version (1.x) doesn't have that option yet. It might come in the future. 

At the older client, you can use "View -> Uncheck Activity Feed" in the top menu.

@Jordi That's what I was talking about, my version 1.0 (on Windows, not tried on Mac) has that: View -> Friend Feed. Is it different on a Mac?

Yes it could be. My View menu only has options for resizing my client or going into fullscreen.
