MacBook Pro play/pause/skip buttons control iTunes after wakeup

My Question or Issue

I often leave my computer to sleep with Spotify still open (and iTunes closed). When I wake the screen back up and press the "play" button on my keyboard, my computer opens up iTunes instead of playing the ongoing song on Spotify. Then I have to shut down iTunes in order to control Spotify with the keyboard buttons. 

This issue appeared after the Mojave update.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Hey Racharlier,

This is very annoying, and is clearly Apple have intentionally done to try and take away market share from spotify with Mac users.

I hope there's a solution soon!
