My Question or Issue
Spotify folders are lagging extremely. When I open a folder to view my contained playlists, the "opening" of the folder can take up to 3-30 seconds, sometimes doesn't even happen at all. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. When I "open" a folder in Spotify, Mac Activity Monitor shows Spotify jumps from 0.06% of CPU to 99.6% usage! I am running a M1 Pro with 36GB RAM! How could opening a folder pull that much of my CPU?
I've filmed a video of this issue here.
Thanks!!

Well, this is interesting. I left Spotify open while writing the previous post - and apparently the cache has grown even though I haven't been browsing anything (I did start some music that has played in the background). See new picture as proof:
Even since I took this picture to post it, it has now grown to 3218MB.
EDIT:
Decided to keep an eye on this. It grows as a new song starts playing - apparently it adds any new song played to the cache. The numbers do not update during the song playing - it happens a couple of seconds after a new song is started. Interestingly enough NOT if I skip a song. Here are my findings on how the cache grew as songs played:
3239 - 4:40 minute song
3251 - 4:30 minute song
3262 - Skipped to next song in playlist. Nothing added to cache as next song was playing.
3262 - 4:50 minute song
3289
Now - if the cache is going to keep growing like this it is going to cause some serious storage space issues for me.

Thirst thing after I log in with my account I shouldn't get an "are you a human" images check verification ? I don't get that on any other website/forum. Weird.
Second thing: yes, I have a huge library, yes, I have a lot of playlists. But using the Spotify app on my Windows 11 has been a nightmare for a while now. Pausing or playing again a song lasted several seconds. And adding songs to various playlists, too.
Yes, I have enough ram e.g. to play Skyrim Special Edition and no I will not delete all my playlists now [I do delete some of them once a month, please believe in my self-control].
I've noticed in Windows Task Manager before, that when Spotify software is running it splits into 5-6 different processes and steals LOTS of RAM memory.
What was my solution ? Now I open Spotify in my internet browser, only. For now it's Firefox with a Spotify Player Extension, if I want to use it. And guess what ? Keyboard built in pause/play button works smooth, everything goes smooth, my laptop does not struggle for life when I launch Spotify.
Mods: please, don't advise people to delete something from their library or buy more ram. If someone loves music and is proud of their music collection - they won't delete stuff just because a software doesn't work. They will just delete one software and look for another.
Me - I tested other platforms/apps like Tidal or Deezer [please stay away from them, they can't even secure their users passwords, true story] and Spotify is still the best of them all. I'm a proud premium user, been one for years. And I'll always be patiently waiting for the "Spotify HQ" or whatever it's going to be called. Peace and love.
p.s. the "im not a robot" thingy won't even let me post my message ! And I'm logged in with my spotify account ! Guys, seriously ?? Maybe some IT people in the Spotify company should be fired ? **bleep**.
Any update on this serious issue? Using the Spotify desktop application (both on Windows and Mac, read the answers in this thread) is a horrible user experience for months now. The lack of serious support and proper communication from Spotify is pretty concerning. I'm considering cancelling my subsription at this point.
@support employes: The desktop apped worked pretty well with large libraries of custom playlists before the software rewrite of the Spotify desktop application some months ago. We are paying customers, suggestions such as "delete most of your custom playlists in order to get a proper user experience" are hilarious and you know this. Stop such spam in this thread, it doesn't help anyone. It is clearly a software issue, I assume multiple bugs related to the local file cache and or UI.
Is there any chance to forward this issue to technical employees?
Hi Folks
Dan here from the Desktop team. We're hopeful that version 1.2.45 which is currently rolling out will represent a big improvement in this issue. Please do update as soon as it's available and let me know here if you're still experiencing problems.
Thanks in advance.
The latest update has fixed the issue with the slow browsing. I am so relieved to be able to listen to my music again. Thank You.
Still an issue with the excessively large cache, but I suppose that is an entirely different topic. Maybe I'll try and clear it and hope for the best (it's getting close to 10GB by now).
The new version of the Mac app is much more responsive for me. Thank you for the fix, please add testing so this doesn't break again in the future (:
Hey everyone!
Thank you for your patience.
As @pjhsea mentioned, we can confirm that the internal teams have worked on this and there's a fix rolling out in the latest version of the app. If you're still having this issue, we'd recommend updating the Spotify app to its latest version.
Hope it helps. If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.
still using the latest version doesn't fix it unfortunately for me, so here is an issue, @OscarDC, can you show the devs this video it would help them fix it, thank you.
Hey there you, Yeah, you! 😁 Welcome - we're glad you joined the Spotify Community! While you here, let's have a fun game and get…
