Spotify App: "This app is restricted to Premium users only" Error Code

Spotify App: "This app is restricted to Premium users only" Error Code

Plan

Premium

Country

USA

Device

Macbook Air (Mid 2013)

Operating System

OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.5

Over the weekend, I had to do a series of shutting down and restarting my Macbook Air due to several tabs refusing to force quit. Today, I opened up the Spotify app on my desktop only to be greeting with the error message, "This app is restricted to Premium users only (Error code: accesspoint:22)."

1) I do have a confirmed Premium account (and have been a Premium user for years)

2) The Spotify app on my iPhone 12 is working with no issues

3) I am able to log into my Spotify account online with no issues (and am able to confirm I still have Premium status)

I have so far:

1) Restarted my laptop

2) Changed the password to my Spotify account

3) Checked for software updates on my Macbook Air (according to the App Store I don't have any)

What am I missing here? This is the first time this has ever happened before. Thank you in advance!

I'm experiencing the same thing, except mine says "Error code: 409"

I'm on Fedora 36 (x86_64) using the spotify desktop client version 1.1.5.153.gf614956d, which seems to be up-to-date.

Same here...

accesspoint:22, the Spotify experience!

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out.

We're currently in the process of deprecating older app versions, so for anyone seeing this error message, please try the following (if you haven't already):

Let us know how it goes.

Deprecating or disabling?  These are two different things.

Also the original topic was about MacOS 10.10.5 (Yosemite).

I had the same issue. I went to their site and downloaded the app again and installed it overwriting my existing install, and it worked. I think I downloaded the app initially like 3 years ago, so I guess maybe it's outdated?

this is not a solution.

it is in fact the opposite because it just creates more endless loops of confusion for 10.10.5 users because the link you provided will not work.

how is spotify going to address support for premium users who cannot update their operating system?

hi thanks for your useful guide. I re-installed Spotify on my iMac and all is working again 🙂

Solution:

Hi! This exact thing happened to me and I did everything you did as well. I finally figured out how to fix it.

So, you want to log in to Spotify web player on your browser and make sure you click 'remember me' to stay signed in and don't use an incognito browser. Then you want to un-install Spotify by going to Finder > Applications > then double click and 'Move to Trash'. Then go back to your browser and re-install Spotify for Mac and once it opens, it will automatically open your browser to log in. It will remember your login info on your browser so you just click the green and it will redirect it back to the app where your account is ready to use again.

Hope this helps!!

This is not a solution. Tech companies need to support older operating systems to keep perfectly good computers out of the landfill. I'm a professional musician and early adopter of digital music technology and was very early on the internet promoting my music with a website. What I can tell you is that each technological change has ended up being bad for music overall. There was a brief window at the beginning of the internet before Napster where the search engines would send fans to music artist sites because their search query matched and not because of data mining, and in that period there was some possibility for support of quality music. But now it's impossible to get work done because the systems keep changing so fast. No one could become an instrumental virtuoso if they instrument was redesigned every year. Plus all the promotion tasks have become more and more time consuming than they were before html forms on media websites for press releases and social media posts. And the algorithms now just point listeners to music that sounds exactly like what they already listen to, with a preference for more famous artists or for tracks by artists that are on a major label rather than their independent releases. The changes that AI is bringing right now are even more dangerous than any of the previous technologies that had been released into the wild on the internet. Spotify needs to change its whole approach to be more supportive of high quality art. Content should be more important than technology, and artists shouldn't have to keep redesigning website because of changes to browsers. They could start by keeping their app working on older computers.

I can access the app on my phone but on my macbook it says that the app is restricted to premium users, however I am a premium user.

The same thing has happened to me and I am also running Mac OS 10.10.5. This is my legacy set up so that I can still run my Adobe Creative Suite without paying $50 a month to Adobe to be on their cloud version. If I update my OS, I lose all my Adobe software capabilities. Perhaps Spotify would like to give a discount to people who can now only listen through their phones???

Hi there - I agree - is there any hope for someone like me who can't update my system (I have a good functioning MAC with yosemite 10.10.5, or do I have to spot Spotify subscription?????

Great stuff mate, so for people like me who have a slightly older Mac we cant run spotify?? What do you suggest, we buy a new mac just so we can listen to music? Apple Music subscription here I come. Useless!

Error code accesspoint22 comes up, sying the desktop app is only for premium member, which I am, confirmed with new card details and everything.

One advantage of an Apple Music subscription is that the artists get paid a little more than with Spotify. But it's still not very much. And Apple is part of the problem here because of their absurd yearly release schedule of new operating systems. Instead, they should fix the operating systems they already have.

I can understand the other's frustration, but I can also understand the desire to update an API and deprecate the old one. I disagree with the decision, but it's not an incorrect one. That part's fine. I don't care.

The situation however is this: not only is the update not available through the very conspicuous auto update feature (which is how almost every user will assume they receive major updates), not only is the user not notified that an update exists, the user is instead given an error message that states they haven't paid for something that they did in fact pay for. That is what's unnacceptable. And let me emphasize this: it's insulting to be told you aren't a paid user after having been subscribed for years. I'm amazed by how appalling such a small screwup can be. That error really needs to be fixed.

"Slightly older Mac" lol what are you talking about Yosemite came out 8 years ago and if that's the latest OS your computer can run then that means your iMac or MacBook is at least 6 years older than that.

Look at the list of compatibility for El Capitan 10.11:

  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

It is insane that people legitimately expect every software company to support 15+ year-old computers because you refuse to upgrade.

You want to keep using outdated operating systems that are loaded with security flaws, go right ahead. But, absolutely no one, especially not a private company, is required to support you.

spotify is a glorified browser with audio output. why do i need a new
machine to run the same exact features i had in 2015?

spotify runs on in-dash car stereos and rinky dink androids that have a
third of the same computing power with infinitely more flawed security. it
is a choice to be lazy developers.

no performance/feature upgrades = no hardware upgrades. simple as.
