Spotify on Mac crash when quitting

Spotify on Mac crash when quitting

Latest Spotify App on Mac OS 11.7.7 always crash while quitting the app, and it's mandatory to do a forced quit. I've already re-installed the app cleaning every cache before a new installation but the problem is still there and quite annoying. Thank You.

Hey @albibello,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

Great troubleshooting so far; we can add a few more steps to make sure we've covered all the bases. Since you've already reinstalled and cleared the cache, we'd recommend also clearing any entries that contain Spotify from the host files on your computer. To do so, you can follow the instructions in this post (even if it's a different issue).

If the issue persists, include in your next response the Spotify version you're currently running to continue investigating the case.

We'll be on the lookout.

Ciao and thanks for the answer.

i've checked the "hosts" file but there were no entries with spotify.
i'm using Spotify per macOS (Intel) – 1.2.14.1149.ga3ae422d

Hey @albibello,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Is it possible to test this with a different connection and/or a different Spotify account? This will help us narrow down the possible cause of the issue.

Cheers,

Ciao and thanks for your reply,

actually with a different account (not premium) it closes perfectly.

free version that works better than premium.. nice! 😄

It was me with the other account 😅

Hey @outer / @albibello,

Thank you for letting us know!
Such app behaviour can sometimes get caused by an overwhelming amount of songs saved in your playlists.

If you have an overly big playlist (1000+ songs), it may be a good idea to try and relocate some of those songs into separate ones. It's worth taking a look 🙂

Keep us posted on how things go 🙌🏼

Ciao and thanks for your reply,

unfortunately even if i've deleted two massive playlists the problem persists.

wait wait wait..

after this procedure:
— delete >1000 tracks playlists

— uninstall the app and clean
— download the app, install and run

the app started closing again, but when i edit my preferences and go back to the old library layout (way better than the new) it crashes again while quitting..

now it's working keeping my preferences.. but honestly this new update is too buggy.

also when i add a track to a playlist a receive this:

Schermata 2023-07-03 alle 11.47.07.png

It keeps crashing and losing all my preferences about the library. could the problem be there? i never experienced something like this before the library update.. (and honestly, it's becoming quite annoying).

Hey @albibello,

Thanks for your reply.

Regarding the message you saw when adding songs to a playlist, we can confirm we're aware of that behavior and we're currently investigating it in this thread. You can subscribe to it to get notified as soon as we have news on that matter.

On another note, since you mentioned you continue to notice inconveniences, would you mind logging in on a different computer to check if you can replicate this behavior? It’d be awesome if you could check. You can ask for the computer of a relative or a friend to open your account and check.

Lastly, and just to confirm, do you use a VPN? If yes, try switching it off to check if you notice any difference.

Keep us in the loop!

sorry but you can't be serious.. i won't install spotify on another person or public computer and login with my credentials to make a troubleshooting test for you.. is this customer care or i'm doing the job?
i do not use any VPN..

Hey @albibello,

Thanks for keeping in touch.

Just to double-check, did you try disabling the Hardware Acceleration on your Desktop App? You can find it in the app's Settings > Compatibility > Hardware Acceleration. It should look like the screenshot below when it's turned off.

In case you haven't, we'd suggest that you do the aforementioned to check if the app behaves the same way.

Something else you can try out is deleting the prefs file, which holds information about the currently logged it account:
  1. Open Finder on your Mac and click Go > Library (if you don't have hidden folders enabled, press the option key first and it should appear).
  2. Go to Application Support > Spotify.
  3. There you'll find a file called prefs, simply delete it.
  4. While in the Spotify folder, you'll also find a Users folder. Open it and delete its contents as well.
  5. Restart the Spotify app.

Keep in mind that if you manually add lines to the prefs file we can't guarantee the app will work as intended.

Hope this helps. If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.

as per other solutions proposed, it worked a couple of times and then we're back at crashing..

it's quite random now.. sometimes it crashes sometimes not.
