My Question or Issue

Hi there! I'm here because I have a really strange issue. My Spotify for Desktop client automatically starts muted, and using the volume keys on my MacBook Pro, aka F10, F11, AND F12, don't modify the volume in Spotify at all, even though on previous Intel MacBooks it could and that was the default behavior.

Even if my system volume is set to max, I go to launch Spotify and Spotify launches with its volume completely mute. I have to manually turn on the volume every time I open up Spotify, and that volume that I set doesn't stick--i.e. I turn on the volume, quit Spotify, start it later, and the volume is mute again. I have no clue what's going on.

I have Beardie installed (a 3rd party client designed to let the media function keys work with other music playing clients on Mac, not just their stock music player), and Beardie does not interfere with this, as the same issue is happening whether Beardie is open or not, and Spotify is indeed checked within Beardie's settings.

I have restarted my computer several times, did a quick uninstall and re-install of Spotify, and even did a more robust uninstall (from your uninstall/reinstall guide) that removed the caches folders and whatnot. This still doesn't fix the issue. What gives? See my screenshots (name blocked off from screenshots due to my Spotify account being connected to Facebook) for what the volume looks like when I start the program/app, for what my Spotify internal settings look like, and for seeing that I even have Spotify enabled in my Mac's System Preferences under System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Input Monitoring.

Hi there @daemon_trances,

Thanks for the post and sharing your info with the Community!

Can you try the following:

  1. Open the Spotify app and go to Settings.
  2. Go to Startup and Window behavior (This could be hidden under Advanced on some devices).
  3. Select "No" on the option Open Spotify Automatically after you log into the computer.
  4. Turn the volume up from the slider.
  5. Restart the Spotify app and your computer.

Let us know if that helped 🙂

That worked! Now how can I make it so that when I turn my volume down with my computer's volume buttons, Spotify's volume goes down the same amount as well?

Hey @daemon_trances,

Thanks for your reply.

We really appreciate you keeping us in the loop.

Since you mentioned you're using a third-party app to control volume with your media keys, we'd suggest you contact the app's developer/support, so they can provide you with some insights. Unfortunately, we don't support that feature, so it'd be better to contact them for further assistance.

Hope this clears things up. If you have any questions or need a hand with anything else, we're always a post away.
