It can also mean you have an unread message, so check the messages tab in the client.

Click the little notification bell at the top right of the Spotify app and it will go away.

Can you  click with two fingers and force quit Spotify? See if it re-appears when you open up the program again.

Yeah try restarting the app.

 

The badge icon means there is a new notification, and usually clicking the bell icon removes it.

Thanks for the insight! I had totally missed that little "1" next to the messages tab, obviously this is the "1" that the desktop badge is referring to.

 

There was another issue getting that badge to disappear after reading the unread messages - I had to restart the application for it to go away.
