Discover Weekly Constantly Bad

Discover Weekly Constantly Bad

Every week, I make it a priority to listen to my discover weekly and mark the songs I don't like, but last year I made a playlist full of "meme songs" aka songs I wouldn't listen to normally, and I played it with my friends in the car as a joke once, and then deleted it. This was June-July 2019, but since then my discover weekly has been stuck on giving me Chinese/ anime songs, and terrible remixes. My music taste is mostly pop, so I don't know why its still giving me terrible recommendations based off of this one playlist, as I always make sure dislike the songs I don't like (usually all of them) and I've followed most of the guides to fix it, but nothing has worked.  Any thoughts? P.S. this issue occurs across my whole account, but i couldn't find anywhere with a post button except for here.

I'm in the same boat.  I have a single playlist of ambient d&d music, and now spotify has decided for four months running that I only want to hear video game music and it ignores everything else I listen to.  Absolutely terrible that there isn't any control over "ignore this"

Hey @jakeasher8 and @mikan23,

Thanks for searching for the answer you need here!

Keep in mind that your Discover Weekly playlists are based not only on your personal likes, but also on what users with similar music tastes have added to their libraries.

We understand that sometimes the songs in that playlist might not be a perfect fit for you and how this might cause some frustration. The best way to improve the algorithm and get suggestions more to your liking is to use the "Hide This Song" button in the Now Playing section of the app. After a while the suggestions should gradually improve to better suit your tastes.

Hope you find this useful. Keep us posted if you have any questions.

I used to try that pretty consistently but it never actually seemed to make an impact.  It would be far more useful to just have better control of the input and be able to say "don't use this song or playlist to drive recommendations."  Particularly since it's not like I dislike the instrumental music that's being used now, it's just that I use it for a specific purpose that doesn't drive my regular listening habits.

Hey there @mikan23,

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this with the Community!

Spotify constantly strives to improve the user experience with its features and the easiest way to achieve this is by regular app updates. That’s why we appreciate you taking the time to share your suggestion with the Community.

If you think other users might also like to see this change in the functionality of the recommendations and Like/Hide song functions, go ahead and create an idea on the relevant idea board. We always take new ideas and feedback into consideration to improve the app. Here you can read more on how ideas work.

We also suggest checking this help article for useful tips on how to submit an idea. As a heads-up, it's good to know that the higher the number of votes an idea gets, the more likely it is for the idea to be implemented :slightly_smiling_face:

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Now I'm even sadder because now at the end of 2020, my spotify wrapped story now shows video game music as the majority of my interest for 2020.  Everyone else gets to have fun and share them with friends and family, I just look like I really love the Witcher OST.

Here is the Idea I posted, hopefully it gets enough Likes to gain notice!

Wow thats really sad

I have all but given up trying the Discover "failure" list. The most irritating feature is that about 50% of the recommended songs are covers of songs that I have liked before.

If this is A.I. at its best, we can rest assured that the world will need human intelligence for many centuries to come.

absolutely agree, I am hoping Discover Weekly will just stop replaying the same songs over and over again, it's so annoying, I don't like covers, I can listen to one song maybe three times and wanna move on..now I only get remakes, nothing else, it's really sad..

Hi there folks,

We understand that things can feel frustrating when things don't work as you'd like them to. Rest assured that we're always trying to improve as we always strive to improve our features.

You can read more about how your feedback reaches Spotify here.

We hope for your understanding and that you continue using Spotify and find it gets better in the future.

Once again - thanks for the feedback, we appreciate it. Let us know if we can help you with anything else.

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

There's a much more fundamental issue here - there is no proper mechanism in Spotify to dislike songs or artists. Music is entirely subjective and absolutely no one likes absolutely everything yet it has been made intentionally difficult for the user to exclude content they don't like. Even when when there is an option to hide or dislike a track it is specific to that one view/song radio/discover weekly list and sometimes just plays the song anyway. Why can't we just have a list of disliked songs and disliked artists that are never suggested?

I have the same experience.
I rarely listen to the discover weekly.
It's often close to the genres I am listening to, but it's really, really bad songs. It also seems like Spotify is stuck on some genres I listen to sometimes. But in the genre I am mostly listening to, its not showing new songs.

I keep an eye on new releases and I learned that the autoplay is really good. Before, I always chose to repeat an album, but I have stopped doing that, since the suggestions that come after, are usually really good and has been working as a discover new bands for me. I use that one instead.
It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.

2022 and still the same issue. I have over 100 Playlists in my Spotify account. All with music i love and a lot of it was found by discover weekly. Some friends used to follow my discover weekly and release radar because there were so many songs they liked coming up... Now i made one - one single playlist with children's songs for my son. We listened to it maybe three or four times. Since that, everything is broken. More then 8 out of 10 songs in all of my "AI created lists" are from that lets call it "kids genre" until today - afer 5 months of hiding every song of that kind in my discover weekly every week. The AI is completely broken here and the user has no way to fix it. I feel like I have to move to a new account, recreate all ofy playlists and never ever let my kid play a song ony spotify again.

Guys, the app is great. But this needs to be adressed. It is so very frustrating.

Sometimes? Release Radar and Discover Weekly used to work just fine, but recently out of the blue all has changed. I now have to dislike 20 out of 30 selected songs "based on your personal likes, but also on what users with similar music tastes have added to their libraries." That used to be up till not too long ago maybe 2 to 5 songs.

Contacting Spotify via Twitter has become a drag as well, I used to get help from people like /EA, /GS, /OG, /EE, /MQ... Now I get a chatbot or someone that tells me to spend more time listening to music I like... erm, I've been doing that for over 10 years now. You should know my tastes by now (and no I do not use Private Sessions).

Anyways, Release Radar and some of the Daily Mixes are stuffed with music I really do not like or want to listen to and Spotify doesn't really want to look into the problem and rather lays the blame on the customer telling me to click the "Dislike" or "Hide This Song" button. I get tired of clicking that button all the time. I want sit back and to listen to music! To me it looks like the
algorithms are off, if not, what else?

I just pressed the "dislike" button on 30 of the 30 boring uniformity DJ balearic stuff. No idea where they based this list on. Big fail.

true, the remakes, I need new music damn it!

A dislike button would be greatly appreciated. I used to use the "-" button, but it didn't seem to have an effect so i stopped. Now that ive been reminded about it, i am using it on 80% of my discover weeklys. liking under 5%..

I am in the same boat. Discover weekly is stuck on music I don't like and it DOES NOT LEARN...

I can't even listen to the discover weekly anymore, or well, the past half year. It's so terrible.

I think it is time delete Spotify. It suggests**bleep** musics. I have never listened to rock musics but it suggests me rock musics. If I find only one or two musics from 30 songs (discovery weekly), I am happy.
