My Question or Issue

Hello all,

Something has probably changed in latest Android12 update for S20, but it impacts Spotify. Maybe it's a permission, maybe it's something else. I believe this is still a widely-used phone, so I have some hope to see this solved.

Until now, I could see my phone in the Devices list (for example in a parallel browser session), by the custom name I have set in the phone OS. Name is alpha-only but not relevant here.

Now I'm seeing "SM-G981B" which is a generic S20 platform name.

The browser can control allright the playback on the phone, even if the name is not-so-cool, so to speak.

Android-side Spotify app looks like it's up-to-date because Play Store does not offer something else. Version is 8.7.16.1354

Browser is browser 🙂 (with F12 hard clean cache and everything I knew to clean it up). On entirely another machine it shows the same.

Another device (a fixed Marantz) still shows with the proper name in the browser list. The Marantz amp itself does not know about devices, so it does not show anything.

All in all, I think it must be a change in Samsung phone OS that collides with Spotify app.

If possible, it would be nice to get back the custom name, because I am sure that there are a lot of "SM-G981B" out there 🙂

I am here because i am having the same issue. I however do not care about the "coolness" of my devices' names. Instead, I use Spotify on several android devices, and I also change devices quite often. Spotify is always displaying only the model number, regardless of how i name my device. This can be really annoying when using more than 3 android devices, as I do not know the model number of every device by heart. (Xiaomi especially loves to give long and unreadable names to devices.)
