Severe Memory Leak When Dragging Into Custom Order

Using the Spotify app on Windows 10, and a playlist with about 600 songs.  The app starts with a footprint of about 300 MB.  However, when moving songs into a "Custom order", memory usage spikes repeatedly until the app crashes and restarts itself.

 

Steps to reproduce:

 

  1. Open Task Manager to monitor memory use.
  2. Open Spotify app.
  3. Add about 600 songs to a new playlist.
  4. Set the sort to "Custom order".
  5. Drag the first song to the bottom of the list, say #300 or greater.
  6. Scroll back to the top of the list.
  7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until the app becomes unresponsive.

 

Workaround:

 

When the Spotify memory use reaches about 3 GB, it is necessary to exit the app completely to avoid instability.

The instructions for keeping the app up to date are not accurate for Windows desktop.  Here's what I had to do:

 

  1. Exit the Spotify app.
  2. Open the Microsoft Store.
  3. Click Downloads.
  4. Scroll to Spotify, then click Update.

The app now identifies itself as

 

Spotify for Windows (64 bit)
1.2.48.405.gf2c48e6f

 

Resource usage is stable after following those steps.  This seems to be the best solution.

With bigger playlists, you may encounter some performance issues with particular lists. We also tried to recreate this from our end following the steps you provided, however, we were unable to. And as a heads-up, it's possible that this is related to your specific setup. In this case, we recommend keeping the app up-to-date.

 

What you can try, just to make sure we cover all bases, is the following:

 

  • Clear stored cache.
  • Reinstall the app.
  • Change the current Hardware acceleration setting. (go to Settings > scroll down to Compatibly)
  • Check with a different Spotify account - for example ask if a family member or a friend to sign in to their account your device.
  • Make sure that your device's OS is up-to-date.

Shouldn't that make any difference, you can try splitting the playlist in to smaller lists, which should help in your case.
