My Question or Issue

When I open the Spotify (Windows Desktop application), I no longer receive the login prompt (it had stopped working maybe 2-3 days ago); instead, I receive the prompt in the attached image, asking me to login through the browser.  Login from the browser works, but I would prefer to login from the app and not always open a browser.

I have already tried uninstalling, clearing temporary and registry files, restarting the computer, then reinstalling.

I checked with my Firewalls and they all seem to permit Spotify to do as it pleases.

I don't seem to have any connection issues as I'm freely surfing the web and logging in from the browser.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

What is the solution to this problem?

I've got Spotify Windows Desktop in Windows 10, Browser Google Chrome.

Clicking the Login button brings me to screen with two links: 'Can't see browser tab?' or 'Try again'. Both links bring me back to the screen with the Login button, so it's an endless loop.

I have tried reinstalling the app and resetting my password.

What version is working for you?

Same issue here, this started happening with the latest updates.

If it isn't http error 8, it's the client_token:101

No firewall, OS, antivirus, modem change.

Garbage bugs rolling out into production and impacting us, with NO WAY OF CONTACTING SUPPORT.

Am getting the same issue too the browser tab wont open for me and I have tried everything suggested

I applaud any and all attempts to increase security from Spotify, great!

But this new browser-integrated login method for the Windows desktop application is extremely inconvenient.

It opens up so many new problem vectors connected to browsers, firewalls and VPNs but also conflicts for users who use a different Spotify account in their browser than in the desktop app (I don't think you guys considered this scenario at all...). The amount of support incidents will increase as a result.

So please Spotify devs, in your next development sprint, please push back the old code through your continuous delivery pipeline. Thanks! 🤗💓

It's solved. After completely reinstalling Spotify, I clicked the login button again. Then I had to wait several minutes before the login tab in the browser appeared. But it worked!

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Spotify desktop application.  Google Chrome is my default browser, and it is up-to-date.  The buttons in Spotify to authenticate through browser do absolutely nothing.  This is the dumbest issue ever that is a THEM problem, and the mobile app is garbage for playlist control.  Glad I'm not paying for Spotify Premium when they can't even get their desktop application right.

Still broken here.

I got it to work on MX Linux but that's not a fair comparison - most things work on MX.

On my old Ubuntu 20.04 system, where everything else works fine, the exact same version of spotify-client, installed from the oficial repo on both machines, simply will not work.  It chooses from two options: the Black Screen Of Nothing, OR, if its mood shifts, it does the old trick of:

  1. Insist on Login via a login tab in a browser (awful, awful, don't do this method unless you are right up there with Heroku or somebody who really, really understands hardcore integrations like this.  It's not for music companies to use!), THEN:
  2. Open the wrong web browser, not the system default one, THEN:
  3. Never actually show a login tab.

Please fix this.  It's broken.

Marked as solution

I tried changing my default browser back to Microsoft Edge again, and it worked. Maybe you can try it!

Not a solution. Many have tried this and the app ignores the default.

Still broken.

I think the problem was in Chrome. Links clicked in desktop apps took a
very long time to open in Chrome. So that's why clicking the Login button
appeared to have no effect. In the latest version of Chrome this seems to
be solved. But switching the default browser could also be a solution for
people having this problem.

You shouldn't have to change your default browser.  It's up to spotify to implement support for any browser that the user has chosen.

If this is a problem, then why not run the login inside the chrome that is embedded in the spotify app itself?

It's incredible to see hundred of postes since so many years about the same bug with no satisfying solution !

Oh Spotify ! wake up !

How is it possible to log and to use spotify with web browser and not with the app !

Changing default browser is not an acceptable solution.
Chrome is my default browser and I don't want to change it for another one to solve spotify bug.

worked, thanks

it works until once you've said login and allowed it takes you to a page that doesn't work

hey, did you get it solved yet?

same **bleep**ing problem year after..

I got the same issue with Mac, ever time to jump to browser to click Start with the app, bug there's no any response with the app. sometimes there shows a auth:1 err log.

pls fix

finally s solution that works
