My Question or Issue

When I play spotify on any device, it starts playing on ALL devices. So if spotify is playing on my desktop then if it also is on my phone. And when get in the car it goes from my phone to my car via android auto. Same if I listen on the Google Home device. How do I make it so that whatever device I play it on, it only plays on THAT device and no other devices.

Hey there, welcome to the Spotify Community!

I understand that you want Spotify to play on the device you want at the time. Worry not, Spotify plays on one device at a time and all the other online devices you have to appear in the devices section in your now playing view.

If it is playing on your desktop then you can open the devices list and select the device you want to use. Then it will play on that and you can use your other devices as a remote control.

  1. Play something on any device
  2. Open the devices list
  3. Select the device of choice
  4. It will stream on that device

Let me know if you need anything else.

I have the same issue and switching device as described doesn't seem to work. Example, When my wife is at home using our smart TV to stream music with my account and i hop into the truck and try and listen to a JRE podcast the truck wants to switch the smart tv over to the podcast and visa versa, if i am in the truck and she wants to stream music it reverts the truck to music and not the podcast. very annoying.

Hey @JohnEFox,

Thank you for joining the conversation.

Sorry to jump in, but the behavior you're describing seems expected as both devices are using the same account. Keep in mind that the accounts are for personal use and the playback will be active on just one device at a time. In this case, we'd recommend logging your account out of the TV to log your wife's account in and avoid interrupting the playback while listening at the same time.

As a workaround, if you're a Premium subscriber; you can download the content and use the account in Offline mode to avoid interfering with the playback of the other device.

Hope this helps. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I have slightly different issue. I want to listen to different things on my devices. But when i have been listening to a song on my desktop, then get in my car it will continue the song, when I want it to continue the podcast i had been listening to the last time I was in my car. I don't want to share the currently playing content on devices. I like them separate.

Hi there @225wzac6sal52btaw6ip,

Thanks for reaching out.

How exactly are you playing in the car? Is the app directly integrated with the infotainment system, is it Android Auto/Apple CarPlay or are you using Bluetooth/aux from your phone? While it is generally expected that playback will sync across devices, it can depend on whether the app is active on a specific device. This means that if a specific device is turned off completely, then the Spotify app on it should still have whatever was playing last on it shown when you reopen instead of the last thing you played overall.

If you'd like for playback to be fully separate between devices, consider checking out this idea. Also check out this one if you're interested in keeping music and podcast separated.

Hope this clears things up.
