Automatically download unplayed podcast episodes

I've recently started a podcast with many episodes and want to download some of the unplayed episodes. I can see how to automatically download new episodes, but I was wondering if I can set it up so the next three unplayed episodes are downloaded automatically. Is it also possible to do downloads over wifi only so that spotify never uses mobile data?

This is a really cool idea, at this point the auto-download feature doesn't have the option to distinguish between played and unplayed podcast episodes. 

When enabled it's functionality is to start downloading a set amount of episodes from the next release of the podcast. For example if you set it to 2 new episodes per show, for every show you have marked to be downloaded it will download the next 2 releases for you to enjoy.

Regarding your question about downloads, currently the Data Saver feature lets you download only the audio of Podcasts and stream only the audio when on mobile data.

We'd advise you to post an Idea about this in our Ideas board. There users can vote on your Ideas and if enough people like what you have suggested we can forward it internally to be reviewed and possibly implemented!
