How do I connect with friends on spotify?

FAQs and other help information published on Spotify's website only explain how to change settings, not explain anywhere how to find friends' Spotify profiles. I connected with a help agent and while I think she was able to explain this, there is no written content is available. She provided this article, which does not answer my basic question by saying that I need exact user names to find anybody: https://support.spotify.com/us/article/friend-activity/. It's also not clear whether I have to allow Spotify to access my Facebook data in order to connect with friends at all. Can you please clarify all of these questions as written help content?

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome. 

We appreciate your feedback regarding this. The option to find friends with Facebook is on its way to be deprecated, so this could be the reason why you don't see the option on your desktop app anymore. 

To connect with friends, we'd recommend searching for the display name or username in the search bar. It's not necessary to have the exact username of the user you want to follow, but it makes things easier in case you have a lot of results. 
 

If you have any issues finding someone's profile, we'd recommend asking the user in question to share their profile link. If you want to share your profile with someone, click on your profile picture (located at the top bar), select Profile, hit the 3-dot menu and select the option "Copy link to profile" as seen below.
