How to play individual artist via alexa

Hi, I have just got an alexa, but when I ask it to play an individual artists, it only plays a radio station ? 

I have tried asking in all the ways I can find via google but no luck.

One suggestion was to turn off auto play in the alexa app, but that didn't help.

Any ideas please?

One of the thing you can do is set Spotify as the default service on the Alexa app and then link it on the spotify app in the Voice Assistants & Apps option on the app through settings.

Yes I have set it as the default service, but I have not linked it in the Spotify app, well I don't think I have 🙂

I will have a look.

Its funny, when I use it in the car, it will play individual artist, but not through the Alexa.

No its all set up correctly in the Spotify app, so I am a bit stuck now 🙂

In order to start investigating this behavior, would you mind confirming if this happens with every artist you've tried or if it's just with a specific one? 

Also, since the result may change depending on the voice command you're using, would you mind trying with different commands such as "Play [artist name]", "Play music by [artist name]", "Play [artist name] on Spotify" or "Play songs like [artist name]" to see if it makes any difference?

No, you get the same result, always (artist) radio

Play music by [artist name] = you get (artist) radio

Play [artist name] on Spotify= as above

Play songs like [artist name]"= you similar artist or the artists themselves.

The Spotify app its linked to is on an Ipad, if that helps

Thanks for the response and for the details @smac48!

We took another look at your description and since you've stated that you're on the free version, keep in mind that you'll be able to play songs only in shuffled artist radio as playing music on demand works only on desktop.

It's also worth mentioning that if you notice any app misbehavior or that it gets stuck, you can always clear the cache and give Spotify a clean reinstall as it helps resolve different issues. For more info you can check out this article.

Thanks for getting back to me, someone else on a similar thread got back to me.

They explained that whilst I can request an individual artist with the free version in my car, that does not work with alexa.
