Re: Starting playback on Chromecast from Google Assistant doesn't work

Re: Starting playback on Chromecast from Google Assistant doesn't work

I have a similar problem: Starting playback from my Google Assistant via Chromecast to my Onkyo TX-NR6100 suddenly stopped working around 2-3 weeks ago. It used to work fine before. I did not change anything in the setup inbetween.

Reboot of all involved devices does not help.

The Onkyo supports Chromecast and Spotify Connect. Streaming from the phone to it via Spotify Connect works fine. However, Chromecast can no longer be selected as protocol in the Spotify App. It is shown as supported, but when trying to switch from Spotify Connect to Chromecast, nothing happens, and the app continues to use Spotify Connect.

Hi @fracklaus,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you please provide us the following:

  • Could you describe the exact behaviour in a little more detail? What happens when you try to start the playback?
  • When did this start happening?
  • Does it happen across different networks? Test this if you haven't already, you can use a hotspot from your phone if necessary.
  • A video of the behaviour. If the files are too large to attach here in the Community, you can send them to us via Google Drive or as unlisted YouTube videos.

With this information, we’d be happy to investigate.

Keep us posted.

Hi @Joan,

thank you for your quick reply! To reproduce my issue, I need to do the following steps:

1. Give voice command to Google assistant to play music on Onkyo device ("Hey google, play music on Onkyo").

2. Google assistant confirms that it has received the command and will play music from Spotify on the device Onkyo

3. Nothing happens.

This is the case since ~2-3 weeks. Before that, when doing exactly the same steps, the Onkyo devices switched on (in case it was off), selected "NET" input, and started playing music via its chromecast built-in service.

When I follow the same steps as above, but use a different streaming service (e.g., youtube music or deezer), everything works as expected. So it seems to be a Spotify-related issue.

I don't know what you mean with "does it happen across different networks". I need to use my local Wifi network, otherwise, google assistant cannot access the Onkyo device in the same network. My internet connection is working properly - I can play Spotify on my mobile phone and directly on my Google Assistant devices - just not on the Onkyo via Chromecast.

Please let me know if you need further information.

Hi @fracklaus,

Thank you very much for the detailed reply!

Could you please check if Spotify is set as the default music app in the Google Assistant app? You can find this under Settings > Services > Music. Also, if instead of "play music" you say something more specific like "play <artist>" or "play <song>", does it work then?

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Joan,

thank you for your support! Since yesterday evening everything is working again as expected. I did not change anything on my side, it just was suddenly fixed.

In case the issue reappears, I will report here.

Hey @fracklaus,

Thank you for your reply and confirmation.

We're glad to hear that everything is working fine now.

If you ever have any other questions in the future, feel free to post in the Community again 🙂

Cheers!
