What Are Your Favorite Episodes About Sports?

Hi all! Now with the Summer Olympics over, and the Winter Olympics just on the horizon, the Blind Landing team wanted to put together a few recc's of our favorite podcast episodes for anyone looking for great stories about sports –– and, of course, if you haven't already heard the first season of Blind Landing, check it out now on Spotify. But we also want to hear your picks, too! What are some great sports podcasts we should check out? What are some podcast episodes that took you inside the mind of an athlete or taught you something fascinating about sports? Comment below our picks and let us know!

1) Stuff You Missed in History Class SYMHC Classics: The Nazi Games and Jesse Owens
The Olympics often end up being a snapshot of the world at a certain moment in history, as evident by this episode of Stuff You Missed in History Class. This episode unpacks the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and how the games functioned as Nazi propaganda. While the hosts delve into stories of the individuals and countries that boycotted the games, they also unpack the way in the games effectively left those who attended with a positive impression of the Nazi Germany.

2) Where Is George Gibney? – It Happened in the Summer
An intense but important series, Where Is George Gibney? is a 10-episode series that tells the story of the search for George Gibney, former head of the Irish national swim team. Gibney was charged with sexually abusing athletes for years in Ireland but never stood trial, and later moved to the United States to live out the rest of his life under an assumed name. This true-crime podcast is as remarkable for the way it skillfully tells this sad tale and it is for the impact it's had in putting a spotlight on this story that had faded into obscurity.

3) Higher Learning – Sha’Carri Richardson’s Suspension With Olympic Gold Medalist Sanya Richards-Ross
Olympic Gold Medalist Sanya Richards-Ross joined Higher Learning hosts Rachel Lindsay & Van Lathan in the immediate aftermath of Sha’Carri Richardson’s suspension from the Tokyo Olympics back in July. They each hold a different reaction to the event, with all three all attempting to navigate the ethics of the situation, trying to hold space for what they want to see happen and what they think should happen, and how those two things can sometimes be contradictory. Where they find common ground is in the discussion of how this event goes beyond just one moment, and instead raises questions about the sport, the rules and the governing bodies.

Not one of the big sports but I highly recommend this episode of The Rich Roll Podcast. Bonnie Tsui talks about her book, Why We Swim. (Interview starts 6 min in). Swimming as meditative, reflective, and calming. Also speaks to how our brain changes when we are in and near the water. Super cool.
