The Spotify Kids app created for users under 13 years old, and they usually would not be able to create a regular Spotify account because of the age restrictions that Spotify has in place. This is why a direct transfer between accounts is not possible.

So I would have to eliminate his account and then add him in again? With his same email address?

Thank you for reaching out and welcome to the Community!
If your son has an existing Kids account you'll need to create a new standard one here. Spotify Kids is a separate application that works in combination with family subscriptions without the need for your child to have an e-mail address, so when you create the new Spotify account you'll need to use your son's personal email address.
The Kids app has extended parental control features to allow minors to enjoy musical content as well.
If the member you whish to re-add to your family subscription is no longer in that minors age group and now has a standalone account, then yes, you can remove the old Kids account from your account page and send an invite to the newly created free account.

wait a second, I need to delete my child's Spotify Kids account and then invite them back in -- just to give them access to a regular Spotify family account?
How can we do this without losing all of their playlists?? I'm stunned if this issue hasn't been a problem for you previously... taking away all of my 13 yr old's playlists?! please help

Thanks for the reply.
The Spotify Kids app doesn't need an actual account to operate and this is why the contents of the Kids app can't be transferred to a proper account.
But as we constantly strive to improve the user experience within bot the Spotify and Spotify Kids app, we hope to implement a solution to this hurdle soon.

Thanks for your reply. A Kids account may not need a specific "actual account" but it still takes one of the 6 spots in our Family plan?? And since there are 6 of us it still means he needs to lose his account and all his playlists before we can give him a "regular" account.
Makes us regret we ever tried the Kids concept in the first place -- benefits are not worth the hassle of converting

Thanks for the post.
I know this might seem like a hassle, but the reason for this inconvenience is that the Kids app has access only to a specially curated library for young children, and not the regular Spotify library. So there is no way to convert playlists from one to the other.

It is exhausting how backward Spotify's support is for kids and families. It took years of lobbying to even have a kids app, and for it to have such limitations, which totally dismiss what our kids have been listening to and caring about in their Spotify app over years - that is shocking really. We finally share our playlists with them, but the kids can't make these playlists offline for long trips when they want their music most. wth is the logic behind that?

Is that the best you can do? Spotify's entire programming team couldn't manage to implement this feature? It is such a poor and regressive response to loyal paying customers and their kids.
Wow, we just set up a Spotify Kids account for our 10 year old daughter and I was just wondering how we would convert it into a grown-up account when she turns 13. I don't think she can have her own playlists in Spotify Kids, only ones we share with her, but in 3 years she will have still accumulated a lot of favourite songs and history and it seems crazy that this will have to be deleted and she'll have to start her entire Spotify journey from scratch. I think we'll just set up a regular account for her, block explicit lyrics and carefully monitor what she listens too!
Or will you be changing how this works any time soon, Spotify?
This really doesn't clear things up at all. You would expect the "specially curated library" to be a subset of the regular Spotify library so it absolutely should be able to transfer "up" to an adult account. Of course not the other way around but this is a comical answer.

Maybe it didn't occur to any of the spotify devs that kids who are under 13 at the time of setting up the account might become over 13 at some point in the future? At the very least, if there's no way to change the account type from kids to regular, then there should at least be a way to transfer playlists to a new account in their name.
Speaking from my own experience, most of the under-13s I've known did eventually become 13 later in life.
If you have a family account, only the manager can control the accounts. The fact a parent can’t upgrade their child once they get a bit older is a little frustrating.
