My Question or Issue

In May the costs for the Premium Family plan will be raised. So I want to change to Basic Family. I have found the option to change in my account. But it seems as if I need to pay now for the basic plan and will be billed again in May. So then I pay double. Is that correct?

Hey @Liesplanq, thanks for reaching out to the Community!

When you change plans, you will be told when your next billing date and charge will be moving forward.

Basic plans are billed monthly and are available for previously existing Premium subscribers. Keep in mind though that if you cancel your Basic plan, it’s not possible to resubscribe to it. There’s more info about this here

Hope this helps!

I have the same question. The reply unfortunately does not help me.

I want to change to basic family. My account page specifies my current costs and next billing cycle (my premium also is on monthly direct debit). It also states the costs for the next billing cycle and wants me to confirm to immediately pay via iDeal (direct payment). It is not clear that there will be a double payment. It is confusing because I am already a paying customer. I would expect a confirmation for direct debet for the new subscription.

Hey @RRoel and @Liesplanq,

Thanks for your reply! If you are charged when you switch plans, that charge should be refunded automatically in the upcoming days. Please check your balances to ensure the charge has been refunded. If you don't receive the funds within a business week, please reach out to Customer Support who'll investigate further.

Hope this clears things up!

Hi, thanks for confirming that any double/ overlapping charges will be refunded. Can there be any other impact for us (other than audio books not being available) if we switch to Family Basic? Anything at all?

And for how long will it be possible for existing Premium Family groups to switch to Family Basic? Is there a deadline to decide on this offer? (I saw that Basic is only offered to existing Premium Family members, and for new groups they can only choose Premium Family. I can imagine the offer may be temporary before the 21,99€ silently becomes the new default).

Hey @St48,

Thanks for reaching out.

We confirm that the only difference between the two plans is that Family Basic doesn't include audiobook listening time.

There's currently no deadline for signing up for the offer, however, you need to be on a Premium Family/Duo/Individual subscription before a certain date which varies by market. The easiest way to check if you're eligible is to visit https://www.spotify.com/account/manage-your-plan/ Eligible users will see the option to downgrade there.

Note that you can only downgrade to the same type of plan that you were previously on (e.g. Premium Family to Family Basic).

We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I wanted to change my subscription from premium to basic, but I just paid today for the premium and if I want to change my plan I have to pay for the basic also. Why do I have to pay twice?
Will I get my premium money back?
Or does it mean I jus added another subscription to my accout?
It keeps leading me from "change subscription" to select another plan, so I click "basic" and immediately have to pay.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out.

When changing your subscription tier to Basic you are asked to enter your payment details in order for the new payment cycle to be set up. You will not be charged again until your next billing date 🙂

You can read more about our Basic plans and how to switch to them here.

Hope this helps! We're here for you if any further questions arise.

Hi, no thats the thing. I have to immediately pay €10,99. So will I get the premium refunded since I already paid for this month?

Hey there, @Sterrr,

Thanks for the reply!

In that case, the charge should be refunded automatically in the upcoming days - be sure to check your balance regularly to see if it has been refunded.

Cheers 🤘
