Why does Spotify Family require the same address?

Why does Spotify Family require the same address?

I am a student at a university in a different state from which my parents live. I still go home for the holidays and breaks, but am about to graduate and move somewhere else permanently. I was going to purchase Spotify family for my parents (neither of whom currently use Spotify) as a Christmas gift, but given the lack of clarity on the “same address” issue and Spotify shutting people’s accounts down if they aren’t near each other, I’ve decided against it.

Therefore, my question is this: why the **bleep** does Spotify force users of the family plan to share the same address? Are my parents not “family” of mine in your eyes if we are a couple states apart? Can they no longer be my family once I graduate and move?

I understand you want checks in place to ensure that people joining these plans are actually related, but come on. This is ridiculous. Netflix and Amazon don’t care if we all live together to share a plan. Neither does our cell phone provider. Come to think of it, Google’s and Apple’s streaming services don’t care either. So after two years of loyal subscription, I’ll be taking my business to one of them at the end of the month. Say goodbye to what would have been an easy $15/mo.

Hey @airquotesfamily,

Thanks for reaching out.

That's just how Spotify's Terms and Conditions are for the Premium for Family plan: https://www.spotify.com/legal/family-plan/.

All members of a Premium for Family plan must reside at the same physical address 🙂

I agree. I have been a loyal subscriber for years. I was a faithful evangelist for Spotify. I always told others it was worth it. But in this day and age you want us to store our information on your servers just so you can check to make sure that everyone is at the same address? Seems petty to me.

And the answer below of, "That's our policy" is not helpful and comes off as condescending.

You might want to consider allowing your faithful subscribers a little more freedom like the aforementioned services do.
