How do you decide whether or not to follow other Spotify users?

For instance, do you follow other Spotify users because you’re friends or acquaintances with them, or because you have similar taste in music with them, or because of either of these reasons? Or perhaps because of another reason altogether?

I personally feel most comfortable following other people on Spotify because of the first aforementioned scenario, in most cases. However, I also often find it difficult to tell which people I’d consider to be “friends” in day-to-day life. For this reason, the recent change to the desktop app and web player that divides the Following list on one’s Spotify profile into “Artists” and “Friends” makes these sorts of decisions especially tough for me, since it appears as if each person I follow on the app is someone whom I’d consider to be my friend (which is most likely not true).

I’m curious to hear how other users decide which other people they follow on Spotify as well, so do feel free to share.
