Add the option to change the order of the songs in your playlists, for example this functionality could be added by clicking on the song you want to move and dragging it to the position you want it to be in, a practical example would be that I have a list of 10 songs and I want the song in position 8 to be in position 2.
Hey @Eduvb,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community. We moved your post from Ideas to the help boards as its content fits better here.
In Spotify, you can change the order of the song within a playlist or sort them in the order you like. If you just want to change the order of one of the songs and if the playlist is yours, you just need to hit the 3-dot menu in your playlist and select the option Edit playlist. After that, you'll see the playlist cover and the list of tracks. On the right side of each track, you can see an icon with 3 lines, you can tap that icon and drag the song anywhere within the playlist. Make sure to hit the Save button on the top right corner to make sure you'll keep the changes.
In case you want to sort the tracks, you can drag down the cover image to reveal an additional search bar and the sorting options on the top of the screen. By hitting the Sort button you'll find different option to rearrange your tracks.
Hope this helps. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask.
I am using the spotify API for first time, once i have the data of a playlists , should i change there the order ? or make a petition for each movement of position of the items on the list?
Hey @marcal,
Welcome to the Community and thank you for joining the conversation.
Depending on the device you're using, the process to change the track order may vary. If you're using the desktop app, you can simply drag the songs up or down to change its order. In case you're using the mobile app, check the steps previously mentioned in the post above. We'd also recommend checking the article about Sort and filter in case you want to rearrange your songs in a specific order.
Lastly, if the information given has not resolved your question, include in your next response more details about the issue process you want to do, some device info such as make, model, OS version and Spotify version to continue investigating the case.
We'll be on the lookout.
"If you're using the desktop app, you can simply drag the songs up or down to change its order. " - you literally can't. It is December 2023, I am trying to drag songs in my one custom playlist, and it simply says "Already added. This is already in your playlist. " then options to "add anyway" or "don't add". Adding again pouts it at the top, no matter where you choose to try to drop it.
Thanks for the post, @Frankymole!
Before dragging the songs, make sure to Sort the playlist by Custom order. This you can do with clicking on the Sorting button located on the top right of the playlist.
Hope this helps 🙂
I can not locate the "edit playlist" function you mention, it does not appear in the drop down which appears when you right click on a play list. Also the drag method is impractical since my playlist has 2000 songs and dragging songs one at a time to new locations can take several minutes for each track.... also you can not cut and paste as there is no menu bar and CTrl x although it does cut the track out of the playlist appears to shunt it to the bottom of the playlist and there does not appear to be anyway of pasting it back into any location by highlighing a track and using ctrl v etc which does not work..... this means there is effectively no way to reorder a large playlist practically
I am at a loss as well. I used to easily be able to move songs in my playlists. Now I can't do them AT ALL. You used to be able to click on the song and be able to move it. Not anymore. No clue what to do anymore. Very frustrating. I think I have tried EVERYTHING. Nothing seems to work.
Thanks for trying, but I can see no "Sorting" button. This is exactly what the playlist top looks like, you can only sort by date or title not custom: https://ibb.co/MfHcbQT and https://ibb.co/NTRh68X :
Hey folks,
Thanks for your replies and for the info shared.
We'd like to add some insights here. @speedy1239, @Frankymole, remember it's expected to not find Custom sorting option on your Liked Songs playlist, This does apply to all other playlists you've created. Another user had a similar idea, so they decided to go ahead and post their suggestion on our Ideas board:
Even though the status is set as Closed - Not Enough Votes, it doesn't mean the idea has been rejected. We’d suggest adding your vote and subscribing to the idea to get notified as soon as we have any updates to share.
Now, if you're having inconveniences with this feature and other playlists you've created, it'd be awesome if you could send us:

This just seems to be an issue, have custom order set on my playlist and cannot move any song, there is no edit playlist button, nothing when right click on a song, left click and holding down the song. Nothing what on earth has happened?
This can be done on Android however but not PC where it is a lot more pracital, where is the option for this on the desktop app? (Version - Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.40.599.g606b7f29)
1.2.40.599.g606b7f29
ok to "resolve" this issue I've had to open the web app and it allows me drag and drop on that, how is that a fix...
On my phone I do not have the 3 dot menu referred to here and shown on various YouTube videos. On my laptop I cannot click and drag tracks around a playlist - nothing happens when I do that. So how the **bleep** do you change the order of tracks in a playlist
This is happening for me now - using windows 11, firefox version 132
See attachment - there's simply no way to sort the playlist.
If you click on "edit details" a box comes up that only allows you to add a description to the playlist details.
Please fix.
