[Playlists] Playlist Groups

[Playlists] Playlist Groups

I think it would be useful to group playlists.  For instance, if a user has 180+ (or 50+) playlists they likely have some overlap in genre and/or mood but are distinct enough that having a separate playlist makes sense.  For the sake of organization and reducing time lost looking for a specific playlist (that they know is 🔥!) they could go to a playlist group/folder to pull them up.  Another example:  I broadly like "Jazz" but I listen to Gypsy Jazz while I work and not Chick Corea or weather report because I'll get distracted.  The same could be said about "Rock".  Basically, I am proposing to give the user creative control of their playlists by adding groups - much in the way Spotify with Genre themed groupings of user and Spotify curated playlists across the wide spectrum of sub-genres.    I think grouping playlists will help the user better recall playlists, better organize their collections,  and improve their Spotify experience.

I've basically had the same idea a few days ago 🤣

My idea was like this:

A user has several playlists e.g:
- J-Rock

- J-Metal

- K-Pop

- Pop-Rock

- Pop-Punk

The user can add these playlists to groups/collections like "Asian Music" and "Pop Music". These groups/collections can be played containing all songs from these playlists or the playlists can be played separately.

With the current folder system, you can have a playlist in one folder but not multiples.

Hi folks,

Welcome to the Community and thank you for sharing these posts!

@Konraaad There is already a feature in which you can group playlists in folders. You can create them in the desktop app, but they will show on all devices.

You can learn more about it in this article.

@dev_kazuto As you well said, at the moment it's not possible adding the same playlist to multiple folders. If you'd like to do this, you can "duplicate" the playlist in order to add it to different folders.

Hope this clears things up. Don't hesitate to reach out again if you have questions.

@MafeG Sorry but that is just bad advice. That would mean that users would have to keep two, three, or even more playlists in sync. Adding one playlist to several groups/collections would mean you have a single source of truth and don't have to add one song to several playlists just to keep them synchronized, especially with collaborative playlists. You can't keep collaborative playlists in sync without a lot of effort.

From a developer's point of view, this is just a basic "One To Many"-Relationship instead of a "One To One"-Relationship like it currently is with folders. This is software development basics and not that much of a change from what it's currently like.

Hi @dev_kazuto,

Thank you for your swift reply.

We completely understand this workaround is not ideal for the reasons you point out. But since at the moment it's not possible adding the same playlist to multiple folders, you can submit an idea requesting a feature that allows you to do it.

In this article you can find the steps to submit it. We always take new ideas and feedback into consideration to improve the app. Here you can read more on how ideas work.

Cheers.
