My Question or Issue

I've been getting severe lag when trying to do literally anything with my playlists at all in Spotify. At first I thought it was an issue with one playlist I had- I had over 8,000 songs in it, and the app really only lagged when I tried to load that specific playlist. As I removed a lot of the songs I noticed Spotify started to speed up and was more responsive. I reduced literally all of my playlists to around 100-300 songs each, and sorted them into folders, and removed all downloads except a few, and that seemed to completely resolve the issue. The next day when I opened Spotify again, the lag was even worse and now I can't even remove a song from ANY playlist without having to wait two full minutes (I timed it). I can't skip or pause songs without having to wait a full minute for Spotify to register it. I have less than 100 playlists (around 80 now)- could even that be causing lag??? I don't have any albums saved or follow any artists either. I don't understand what the problem is now or how to fix it. I've reduced my library as much as I possibly can.

Hey @echovoid,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.

Kudos for that initial troubleshooting! We'd recommend trying some other steps to see how it goes. We'd suggest performing a clean reinstall of the app on your computer. By doing that, the app can be up-to-date, and you can make sure the stored cache is not leading to this inconvenience. You can see the steps for a clean reinstall here.

If the above doesn't do the trick, would you mind trying to run Spotify in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking to rule out any issues with your default Windows settings and basic device drivers? Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Lastly, it'd be really helpful if you sent us the exact Spotify version you're running on your computer. Just to confirm, can you replicate this behavior while using the web player? If not sure, it'd be awesome if you could check.

Keep us in the loop!

I did the clean reinstall, but the issues persisted- however, on my phone I see no issues, as well as when I use the website on a different computer. There is still some minor lag with the playlist that previously had 8,000 songs- I'm wondering if maybe there's some sort of like "ghost data" around that playlist that still makes it think it has so many songs, and I just need to copy the songs into a new one? But other than that, no issues on other devices.

One thing I noticed was that if a song is really delayed in playing, if I then close Spotify in the Task Manager the song will continue to play for however long the delay was, even though the app is fully closed. It is possible that my computer is the issue here. I think the RAM is partially damaged, as well as a lot of other things (this thing is very old and beat up, and it often overheats, and several essential folders just no longer exist for some reason), so I will have to see if the issue still exists when I get a new computer.

Hey @echovoid,

Thanks for your reply and for all the info shared.

Since you didn't encounter any issues on different devices, this behavior could be related to your computer itself and the problems you kindly mentioned above. The lag can be related to a number of factors regarding your device's performance at this point.

On another note, and just to clarify, Spotify uses your device memory to:

  • Store parts of music and podcasts as cache, so it can play without lagging
  • Store downloaded music and podcasts to play offline

When clean reinstalling the app, all that cache gets deleted. In that sense, we think this is not related to any "ghost data" since you mentioned you've performed the clean reinstallation. Nonetheless, you can clear your cache by following these steps:

  1. Click your profile picture at the top, and select Settings.
  2. Scroll down and click Storage.
  3. Click Clear cache.

This can help with the lag. You can also click on Change location to store your cache somewhere else to see if you notice any difference in the issues you've noticed on your computer.

We hope you found this helpful. We're always here to help.

This is happening to me as well. I have a playlist of new songs to listen to, when I remove a song from it, I can't start the next song for like 30 seconds because of the intense lag the program experiences when altering the playlist.

Hey @Calipup,

Welcome to the Community and thank you for joining the conversation.

Just to be on the same page, have you followed the steps mentioned by @AlejaR in previous posts? If so and the issue persists, would you mind mentioning the troubleshooting you've followed so far to avoid repeating processes?

Lastly, include in your next response the make, model, and OS version of your device, along with the Spotify version you're currently running to continue investigating the case.

We'll be on the lookout.

Hey Mate,

Just an FYI, there is no "settings' tab or drop down option in Spotify.

Sincerely somebody who uses the app.

its called Preferences.

Also, none of this worked. Lets just accept the obvious, spotify just doesn't have the upload bandwidth.

Happening to me as well, for weeks now, did all the bs chapter 4 section 3 option 2 things: clean install, reboot, clear cache , donate a liver.

My Question or Issue

on latest version of Spotify(downloaded from the website) scrolling up or down causes a lot of lag (below 30 fps) and cpu usage to spike to high 30's. hardware acceleration doesn't seem to be working.(microsoft store version also performs exactly the same)

hello! Does it also happen on your Spotify web player? mine also lags like that but I think it happens when I click on the home button

hey everyone, since spotify didn't fix this yet, here is a fix: https://youtu.be/YNVdA2XbaJ0
