My Question or Issue

When airplaying to speaker, after pausing music for 30-45 seconds, Spotify will stop playing audio. The music time ticker will still advance, but no audio will play. 

Steps to reproduce:

Open Spotify

Airplay to speaker

Play music for some time

Pause music for 30s - 1min

Play music. No audio will play, but Spotify will appear as if audio is playing.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps like reinstalling the app or testing with a different network? Also, have you made sure that Background App Refresh is enabled for the Spotify app?

Thanks for the most basic solutions I’ve ever heard! This isn’t helpful. I have been experiencing this bug for years at this point, different iOS versions, different phones/devices, different WiFi networks, different speakers. It seems to only happen on Spotify. Please file this as a bug

We're not able to reproduce this on our end and there aren't many recent reports of it in our logs. We'd recommend that you reach out to Apple about this as it sounds like a device specific issue.


In the meantime, we'll forward your report to the relevant team, however, we can't confirm when it will be addressed.


We always work on improving the user's experience and we advise that you keep your Spotify up to date with the latest version, so that you don't miss out on any fixes and improvements.

I have noticed this issue as well, but I had background app refresh off. I can confirm that with another app with the ability to AirPlay audio (Libby), that it did not have any playback issues after pausing audio for a short period of time, but background app refresh was enabled for the Libby app. So it’s not the device issue or iOS issue. I did turn on background app refresh for Spotify and restarted my phone. I’m still experienced the same playback issue.

Yes I don’t see this issue with other apps it seems to be Spotify specific. Background app refresh does nothing for this, I have it on. Like the issue please so it gets more traction!
