App doesn't remember last song played when i close and restart the app

My Question or Issue

 so i listen to a downloaded playlist on my morning and evening commute. starting on monday i start my playlist on shuffle. i pause the playlist and close the app when im at college or work, as well to save battery life. then when i go to open the app again hours later, it forgets what i was listening to and i have to start my playlist over again. it normally only happens whenever spotify updates but its now happening everytime i close the app. its super annoying. ive tried to look in the settings to see if i could turn it on but i cant find anything. this has happened 6 times this week. is this a bug or what is going on that im missing?
