Apple EarPods simply skipping, pausing or speeding up music

So, in the last 15 months I’ve had two iPhone 7s, (one faulty and replaced, one stolen) and have just upgraded to an iPhone  X. With each phone I have experienced the same issue. When using Spotify, my music either jumps, pauses, and most recently randomly speeds up the track by about x2. At first I thought it was either an issue with my EarPods as the first time it happened my volume controls had stopped working, but it has continued to happen with both replacement headphones and on new devices. Any help please, it’s driving me insane.
