Cellular data turned off but Spotify still working

Solved!

Cellular data turned off but Spotify still working

When Spotify recently updated, my data started being used for Spotify even though in my settings, cellular data was turned off for Spotify. Why is this?

Hi all, is anyone seeing any further issues with this? Please let us know how you get along!

The issues remains. I'm Still using Spotify will cell data disabled.

Same issue is still there after Full reinstall of iPhone + Spotify. Using also spotify with cell data turned off.

Hey guys, I'm still liaising with the Spotify staff at this stage about this issue, will let you know when I have an update 🙂

In the mean time - best thing to do is keep mobile data disabled for Spotify, and as a backup, make sure your streaming quality is set to "Normal" not "Extreme" or "Auto".

Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems like if it still uses data when data is disabled for spotify in your phone's settings then it's most likely a problem with the OS and not the app itself. Since apple keeps a lot of restrictions both in what goes on the app store and what regular apps have the permission to do, I highly doubt there would be any way for spotify to override the OS's restriction on data usage without it being a bug woth ios 10.

Swanny,

The problem came at the same day that the Spotify launch the Daily Mix feature. Maybe the problem is with this feature. Maybe the feature is downloading song even if we are not using it. I'm still using the cell data turned off on my iPhone.

Thanks @jmarciobezerra.

One other thing to try is are you able to log into your Spotify account settings, and remove all of your offline devices, then perform a resync of your playlists/songs?

If you can test for a short period without turning off cell data or turning on offline mode, and monitor how much data is being used, that would be awesome.

If you don't have any spare data to test with, that's all good.

Same problem for me on 6.8.0 version for IOS with Iphone 7 plus IOS 10.1.1

I have beta version 6.9 - Spotify is STILL sucking data.

I have never used more than 4 GB of total data in a month (about 2 GB being Spotify). Last month, I used 9 GB with 7.2 GB being Spotify!

I have Download Over Cellular OFF and stream quality set to NORMAL.

STOP IGNORING THE PROBLEM SPOTIFY! You cost me $65 in overage charges last month.

What a completely unacceptable LACK OF response by the company. This thread doesn't have 30+ responses, "Just because".

Get your act together!

I am experiencing the same issue. Almost 500MB data used (my entire roaming allowance, thank goodness it's capped each day) in 2hrs! No streaming, listening to offline playlists only. iOS version 9.3.5, Spotify version 6.8.0 - attached screengrab of usage on November 10, 2016. Have now turned off mobile data for Spotify, but this could have cost me hundreds of pounds if I didn't have a good roaming data plan. As I needed to extend my data plan by purchasing more, I will be asking Spotify for compensation.

Hey everyone, we've seen these questions in our Community around data usage for Spotify on iOS. These are currently being reviewed and users who need assistance with general data settings can reach out directly to our CS team. Thanks!

Hi @swanny, thanks for your tips.

I did this:

- Removed all off my offline devices

- unistalled the spotify from the iPhone

- Installed the new Spotfy version for iOS, 6.8.0.3786 (I'm using iOS 10.2)

- Resync my iPhone and download only one playlist for tests.

- Disabled the wifi, then started the playlist.

- In 20 minutes, no relevant data usage, less than 1 MB. The usage probably happen when i was seeing the radio tab ou the top songs charts tab.

I'm downloading the others playlists now and I will monitor the data usage during the next 24h.

The Spotify team alread knows what was happing?

Hey @jmarciobezerra, glad it seems alright now. The team is definitely aware of the issue, hopefully we'll see a proper resolution soon. Let us know if you have any further issues!

I'm still seeing this issue. To avoid cellular data overages, I've turned off cellular use for Spotify within the iOS settings. Doing so, however, makes listening to the radio stations or Daily Mix impossible.

Spotify needs to fix this cellular data leak. It is a serious problem that affects a fundamental feature of Spotify.

It finally seems to be fixed!!!

Hey all!

Everything now looks good on our end. We'd recommend updating to the latest iOS version (7.4).

If you're still having any issues, let us know 🙂

This issue is still occuring, and I am using the latest version as of today, 8.2.0

Please see attached. Thank you.

spotify wasting my data.jpg

Hey @sdschramm, thanks for that, I'll escalate that up but I'm thinking that is definitely an iOS bug. No app should be able to use mobile data if the OS has disabled mobile data.

I'll see if I can find what the Spotify staff have to say.
