Distortion and really bad sound quality

Hi guys! ( first time on the forums )
I was wondering if anyone can help me out...
I'm currently using the iPhone 5 with the iOS version of 8.0 (I think) and the sound quality is terrible through earphones I've tried different syncing qualities, reinstalling the app and I've bought three different sets of earphones thinking it was the earphones problem but then I thought three different ones? It can't be the issue. My current earphones are Sennheiser CX 160 and I've used these before and they're brilliant, so I've tried the music in my music library and they sounded perfect, I switch to using spotify and it's terrible. Crackling and distorted any voices in the songs sound like they need a cough sweet. I'm just disappointed that I'm paying £10 a month for a service I can't use the way I want to use it. If anyone has any advice I'd greatly appreciate it 🙂
