Multitask trouble with iOS update

I teach indoor cycle and I need to have a notes app visible at the same time I have the audio tracker displayed for Spotify. I recently updated ios and now Spotify is not compatible with the new multitask features on the ipad. I can no longer swipe up to have Spotify audio tracker displayed at the bottom of the screen. If I try and use Spotify in the multitask mode, it dominates and will only display full screen (will not display in the small right screen), which means I have to have my notes in the small side screen (way too small to have extensive notes and ques for teaching a class). PLUS, when Spotify is full screen it's a black background and the numbers on the audio tracker are white and extremely small (I actually can barely read them from my spin bike, causing me to miss instruction ques during class). AND when Spotify is full screen and my notes app is on the small right screen, the notes app covers the right portion of the audio tracker so I can't see the end of the song. All very frustrating and preventing me from effectively using Spotify when instructing cycle classes. Please help.
