Nearly deafened by connecting to new recevier

We just got a new Sony Receiver (STR-DN1080) and were exicited to use Spotify to listen to our playlists. When I turned on spotify connect on the receiver, and selected it as the output from my app on iOS 11, the volume on the receiver started rising to max. It scared the hello out of all of us in the room, including our grandma.

This happened twice and I haven't used it since. 

Is this a problem with the new receiver or the Spotify App? Have I done something wrong or did I miss something?
