New Phone and Local Files from Mac

New Phone and Local Files from Mac

Dear Spotify Community,

I have a bunch of music files synched locally on my Mac with a folder. The files appear on my Mac without any issues. However, on my new phone, when signed into my premium account, the playlist name shows but not every file that I have synched manually on the Mac shows up. Even when I search for it on my new iOS device, it doesn't show up. What do I need to do to solve this?

Hi, thanks for posting your question! Have you set the playlists containing the local tracks to offline mode on your iPhone? Any tracks that aren't matched to versions in the Spotify library won't show up unless you download the playlist containing them while your phone and desktop are connected to the same WiFi network. You'll also want to be sure you have Spotify open on the Mac while you're doing this.

Here is Spotify's guide to downloading local files.

By the way, if you go into your iOS Spotify app's settings, you'll probably find that "unplayable songs" are hidden by default, so you can turn that toggle on to see them at all times and at least know what is missing from a playlist with local files that haven't synced to your phone.

Dear Brett,

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. This was really helpful to know. Unfortunately, and weirdly, it didn't fix the issue, but I say it's weird because I added a new song (also a local song) to a playlist on the Mac app, just to see if that populated the rest of the changes down. On the new phone (iPhone X), it didn't, but I still have my iPhone 7 which I wasn't using at the time, but after checking it, the new song got added there. I followed the steps and even had the Mac client open - I've uninstalled it on the X, reinistalled and even re-signed in, but there's no reflection on the X with the playlists and songs, which is relaly weird!

And sorry, forgot to mention that I set all of the playlists to download on the iPhone X as per your recommendation.
