Offline tracks staying on phone?

I shuffled all my songs and as I didn't want to use mobile data went into offline mode to only play the songs that were downloaded on to the phone. A song played from an album that had "available offline" unchecked so in theory it shouldn't play in offline mode. I had made this album "available offline" but unchecked it a couple of weeks ago, so I thought it had been removed from the phone. Is it possible that when albums that are selected to be available offline and then unselected they are not being removed from the phone? Does anyone know when you de-select an available offline album how long the files stay there? Should the files be removed straight away?

I have had to find the files on my Android phone that contained songs that were previously on my 'play offline' list, and delete them from there. What would be nice is those songs saved to my phone as mp3 files that I could transfer to a jump drive and play directly through my vehicle system.
