Ah, it looks like you're using an iPad, so you don't have to listen in shuffle-only mode. You get to listen totally on-demand, in the same way that you do on computer/web browser. And you can also activate the regular Shuffle option to listen to artists/playlists in shuffle mode too.
Yes, Kenneth has my question exactly. I don't want to have to add all albums to a playlist. The attraction of the feature is to enjoy songs by an artist with a very deep catalogue without having to go through all that work (e.g., Grateful Dead, Ella Fitzgerald).
I got this reply from Spotify. Mystery solved. But I wish there were a way to duplicate that feature in premium.
The shuffle by artist feature is only available for free users on mobile.
The feature is the same as starting a radio station based on that artist in premium, it will play songs related to that artist, rather than just by that artist.
I was listening to a paticular album and only want to listen to that album but then all of a sudden Spotify let me listen to 'suggest tracks' that I did not add to my playlists and I was force to listen to all these random songs that I don't want to listen and Spotify also won't let me skip any tracks and I just wanna know why Spotify is doing this and find a solution to this annoyance.
@Xena - That is to prevent people from making a playlist with only one (or a few tracks) and then using it as on demand playback. Details are outlined in this help page.
I have also made an idea about having the shuffle play button added to premium accounts here:

So you're looking for the ability to shuffle all tracks from an aritst on your mobile?
Free users get the Shuffle option but that will also have suggested tracks by other artists at times.
