My Question or Issue

Spotify App crashes on watchOS (Apple Watch) if local Downloads are being opened

The app works fine with an iPhone, but the downloads can't be accessed.

Same issue is marked here as fixed: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Spotify-app-crashing-on-Apple-Watch/idi-p/5462149 but it is broken again.

Hey @jix_91,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

When the issue involves the downloaded content, it's usually related to some damaged cache stored on your device. First, we'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the app on your watch to fix any damaged file that could affect its proper behavior.

Also, if the issue persists after this, it would be great if you could check the available storage you have on your watch. Keep in mind that you can download up to 100 songs or 10 hours of content, so if you have more than that, we'd recommend clearing up some space as well.

Lastly, and if the issue persists, could you record a short video where we can take a better look at the behavior you're describing? You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert Video option in the post editor. You can also upload it to Google Drive and share the link with us (make sure the video has the permissions for anyone to watch it).

Hope this helps. We'll be on the lookout.

I'm having the same issue here with WatchOS 9.3.1. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app on the watch. I still have 24.6 GiB of storage available.

I'm not about to record a video, but very simply, the crash happens when opening Spotify, swiping to the left-most screen (which shows "Downloads", "Your Library", ...), and clicking "Downloads". The app just closes immediately and I am kicked back to the view of all my watch apps.

Hey @clockyg,

Thanks for your reply and for the info shared.

A common solution in these types of cases is to do a factory reset on the Apple Watch and add it back as a new watch vs. restoring a backup. So, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

If the above doesn't do the trick, just to confirm, is this happening when your Apple Watch is connected to an active internet connection or does it happen when it's offline?

Whoa, factory reset the watch is not much of a suggestion. Talk about applying a blunt hammer to a problem. This is a new watch in the first place anyway.

This happens when online.

If I'm not the only one reporting this, might be worth digging in a little deeper, no? Y'all are in competition with Apple. If I can't get my Spotify music on my watch for when I'm out running, I'll have to drop Spotify and pay for Apple Music instead. At this point, the music catalogues and subscription prices are very similar, so you have to beat Apple with your apps. If you ship a watch app with a button that automatically causes a crash, pretty bad.

Would love to hear a more useful suggestion, or even diagnostic steps.

Hey @clockyg,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Just like any other online app Spotify might start to act up, when there are connectivity issues. That's why checking your internet connection and making sure that the app has access to it is the most important step. Does the watch act up, when opening another app? Let say - open the Maps app and test.

In any case, we're happy to provide a bit more troubleshooting methods that'll hopefully fix this.

As a first step try force close and restart the app on your Watch. To do that you'd need to press the Side button once > scroll and find Spotify app > swipe from right-to-left on to close it and then tap on Remove [X] to confirm.

Secondly, it's worth trying to reboot your Watch. Below are two cases and steps for remediating.
Case A) if your watch is still responding - try standard reboot with these steps:
Hold the Side button for a few seconds > tap on Power off icon and then slide to Power Off the watch. After a few seconds, press the Side button to turn the Apple watch back on.

Case B) if your watch is not responding - try forced restart with these steps:
Press and hold down the Side button and the Digital Crown at the same time until the watch powers off and then displays the Apple logo. The Watch will start after a few seconds.

Hope something here helps. Let us know how it goes.

I have no issues with connectivity. Maps works fine. I tried both restarting the app, and the watch itself, to no avail. Appreciate your efforts, looks like I'm out of luck.

Hey there @clockyg

Thanks for getting back to us.

Would you mind checking if the OS of your watch and your iPhone has any pending updates?

On another note, we'd recommend unpairing and repairing the watch and choosing to set up the watch as new, not restore from backup to see if that makes the difference.

Let us know how it goes.
