Spotify Connect - Multiple Speakers/Devices

Spotify Connect - Multiple Speakers/Devices

After well over a year of working just fine, yesterday my iPod Touch and MacBook stopped being able to connect to each other. Spotify stills works locally on each device just fine, playlists get shared OK, etc.

I keep my iPod in a dock and connected to my stereo. I like to be able to launch Spotify on my MacBook because browsing is easier but select playback on the iPod.  Now when I make the selction, the device popup on the MacBook always shows playing on the computer. It does display the iPod as available and selecting it stops playback on the computer. Playback hangs, the pause/play button is unresponsive. On the iPod when I go to the Connect screen it says "Macbook is incompatible". Yesterday it suddenly started working again after a while, today it wasn't working, then it worked for awhile, right now it's not working again. I tried Support chat and they suggested reinstalling (not possible because I have an older iPod, running iOS 6). It was obvious that the chat person had no idea what I was complaining about.

Has anyone run into this problem?

My MacBook is running OS 10.11 (El Capitan)

My iPod is running iOS6
