Spotify audio quality priority order question

Spotify audio quality priority order question

Hello everyone!

I have some questions/ thoughts regarding which quality spotify chooses to play.

My theoretical scenario: In the settings on my iPhone I have decided to play "Extreme" (320kbit/s) quality when streaming. But my syncing quality is set to "Normal" (96kbit/s) to save space.

So, questions:

If connected to internet, which quality would be played?

Does it matter if I'm connected to WiFi or lets say 3G? Can I somehow control this?

I have a 1 GB/month cap, so I'd like to be able to control which quality is chosen when. Without having to change settings manually every time.

Thanks for taking your time to read this and hopefully respond to my questions!

Also, please let me know if this has been answered in a thread elsewhere, I searched around but couldn't find anything.

And if this is posted in the wrong section, I'd like to be pushed/pointed in the right direction!

Regards,

Martin

When connected to the Internet, the 320kbps quality would be played since you have that set for the streaming.

Currently there is no way to change the quality based on internet connection.

If you want Spotify to add that option, then kudo this idea:

If you have a premium subscription to Spotify and enough storage on your device, you could download your playlists for offline use when you are connected to WiFi. Your syncing quality is set to normal, so the download quality will be less.

Downloading playlists for offline use means you can turn the app to offline mode and still listen to your music without using data on the go.

Just go into the app settings under "playback" and turn on "offline mode"

Thank you for your reply!

I know about offline listening mode and downloading playlists.

Your answer raises another question: Will spotify always choose to stream the music  instead of playing the downloaded song stored on your device if connected to internet?

Lets say I'm listening to a playlist that I've downloaded for offline use, but I now happen to be online. Will Spotify stream the song anyway, resulting in me eating up the 1 GB/month cap unnecessarily?

Thanks again for your response!

I've been using the Spotify iOS app since 2011.

I've noticed that Spotify will play the downloaded version instead of streaming it.

However, the app does uses a small amount of data to load several things from Spotify's server. To make sure no data is used at all while listening, the best thing to do would be to switch on offline mode.
