Spotify used >4GB of data in two days

Spotify used >4GB of data in two days

I listened to music in the car for approximately 2 hours over 2 days. I have all of my liked songs downloaded (which I did at home on Wi-Fi), and the songs I was playing in the car were songs that were already downloaded to my device. For some reason, the Spotify app used up 4.35 GB of my data within these 2 days of playing already-downloaded music. What could be causing this? Download using cellular is set to false. Stream audio only when on cellular is set to true. Cellular streaming for both audio and video is set to low.
I have been a Spotify Premium member for the last 6ish years straight. This is occurring on a new iPhone 16 Pro.

Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out!

Having music downloaded doesn't mean that Spotify will not use data to play these songs if Offline mode is not toggled on.
You can visit the hyperlinked page to find out how you can change the offline setting without having to switch your cellular data off 🙂

This should resolve the issue for you but we're here in case any further questions arise. Cheers!

Just a thought, if having music downloaded doesn’t mean that Spotify won’t use data to play the songs, then what’s the point of even downloading songs? I have all my liked songs downloaded for the purpose of Spotify not using up data to cellular stream every song I play when I’m not on Wi-Fi. Why would Spotify still use data to play songs that are downloaded to my device? That doesn’t quite make sense to me. I know that it’ll show lyrics of the song you’re listening to and the artist’s video when you have Spotify open on your screen, but even if my phone’s screen is not on Spotify and my phone is off, why would it be using so much data?

I tried offline mode and was a little disappointed by its functionality. I was hoping I’d still be able to stream songs over Wi-Fi when at home, but it does truly put Spotify offline and doesn’t let me stream songs even with Wi-Fi. I’m not super thrilled at the idea of having to turn Offline Mode on and off when I’m out vs. when I’m home.
