Spotitfy sound not working in background app even though it says it is playing.

I'm trying to use a workout timer app (Tabata Timer on the Apple app store), and Spotify won't play in the background. Spotify says the song is playing, but no sound is coming out. It starts to play, but then the sound goes out after a couple of seconds. I have updated Spotify, but it still doesn't work. I know it isn't the workout app because I have tried several apps, and the same thing has happened to it. I don't know if this is part of the problem, but I haven't updated the iOS to the most recent type, but could it be part of it? Can anyone help me please? Thanks!

Could you try restarting your device? If that doesn't help, try a clean reinstall of the app following these steps.

If you're still having trouble, let me know the current software version of the iPhone. You can find this by going to Settings > General > About.
