iOS 6 Support Announcement

Solved!

iOS 6 Support Announcement

Hey everyone, the Spotify Community team here.Today we’re announcing that we will no longer support iOS 6 as a platform.

We obviously take retiring platform versions very seriously, and this decision was made with the goal of creating the best experience for our users.

We understand you might have some questions about this change, so we’ve outlined the top questions here. And please feel free to post below if you have any other concerns!

What will happen if I use iOS 6 on my device?

If you already have Spotify version 1.8.5 for iOS 6 installed on your device you can continue to listen to your tunes. Please note there will not be any further updates or fixes for this app as iOS 6 will no longer be a supported platform.

In order to receive support and the latest Spotify features on iOS devices you’ll need to upgrade to iOS 7 or higher. For more information about Spotify’s System Requirements just click here.

How do I update the iOS software on my iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch?

We recommend checking this article on the Apple Support site.

I have some more questions about this...

No problem, please post them here. Thanks everyone!

We obviously take deprecating platform versions very seriously, and this decision was made with the goal of creating the best experience for our users - taking into account both the confusion of having two different Spotify iOS apps available, and the fact that a very small percentage of our iOS users are currently on iOS 6.

Can I just install the previous version to get rid of the hideous green?

Hello

I updated my ipod 4th generation with the latest spotify version (1.8.1.8). I am encountering 2 problems.
When I am offline for at least 1 day: al the albums will show you 3 dots and I can only listen the music if I open it in songs. The songs are not in any kind of order (alphabet, album or artist) so it is not practical.
When I use my spotify account on my computer (windows) and I install new albums in "your music", the ipod doesn't synchronize the music, only the music I added in playlist.

So far what I've done:  delete the app and reinstall again. I've tried to synchronize via wifi and via usb cable. I've restarted the ipod a couple of times. Nothing changes.

I hope maybe someone has/had the same problems and does have some tips.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ninina.

It's an annoying fault that all users on iOS 6 have.

You can't do anything about it and Spotify withdrew suport for iOS6 before bothering to fix it (despite having at that time released a fix for the iOS7/8 version which could have easily been applied to the iOS 6 version). It was an example of Spotify's poor customer support.

I work around it by collecting the albums that I want to listen to on my iPod in playlists rather than albums.

The original thread about this issue is here.

Hope this clarifies.

Hi BitRift,

Thank you for the link and the information.

Is there any way to use a web player on my iOS6 devices?
I have searched for an hour now and all I found was
https://play.spotify.com/
Which redirects me to the mobile site that has no play option whatsoever.

That is really bad - either Spotify with built-in-speaker on iPhone 5 (no option) or use the Hifi with dock for my iPod touch 2. Gen. and not run Spotify (pretty lame also).

What is the support community's reply to that?

Webplay from Spotify needs Flash - as far as I know. Ergo... no way...

Now that is a really good idea 😞

Thanks for the quick reply!

I use rhapsody...... but it isnt free. But at least it works. I got spotify free version for ios5 to load on an old ipad by using my PC and buying it into my library and loading from there.... That's the only way you can do it

Thanks. I will try on my Mac at home (with another program of course) - do you have a source for the iOS5-version?

Unfortunately, that won't help on holiday. 😞

I'm not sure, what d'you mean by "source for the IOS5 version"?

I mean: Where do I get the spotify.ipa file?

Marked as solution

To use an older, no longer supported version of spotify on your apple device,  you have to log onto the internet using safari, or chrome or firefox, etc. and log into your itunes account.   Log into the itunes account that you would use with your older apple device.......   Go into itunes' app section and get spotify.     Now spotify app is in the app section of your itunes library with all the other apps you have ever purchased.

With the spotify app now in your library,  go get your older apple device.  Using the device,  go to the app store and choose to install spotify.   You will now notice the little download bar has a cute little cloud picture on it when you install and it will revert to an older version.  I have done this for ios 5 and ios6 compatible devices without problem.

These older versions of spotify may have some quirks.   For example,  I would base most my listening off of playlists, as these seem to stay updated across devices.

I do not believe you will arbitrarily get free access to .ipa file.

First: file must be signed... or we're talking about jailbreaking...
The only solution is: you got a cloud backup, first delete all content and apps - delete the whole thing and reinstall.

You should talk about IOS6 solution here - IOS5 is irrelevant...

Solution for IOS5 and IOS6 is the same.  If you have spotify in your itunes library,  you can install older unsupported version of app on your device that is linked with that itunes account.

Ah, that's why it never offered older versions. I tried my mother's iPod (meaning her account). Now tried my kids' with my account and it offers me an old version.
Thank you!

Still: an iOS compatible web player would be nice 😉

Isn't, and that's the problem.

Well guys,  all I know is that I used the same steps as above, and it worked for both my old ios5 based ipad and my old ios6 based itouch.   I did this magical feat in the last 3 or 4 months, in fact.     At first I screwed up and used the wrong itunes acct. not realizing the ipad was still synced to my husband's itune acct.....  that didn't work.     Then I mistakenly downloaded the ipad app and I actually needed the iphone app for the itouch (go figure).....    but if you need to re-sync that old device to A DIFFERENT ITUNES ACCT.....  that may solve your problems!  Could be you are taking someone else's old device that's registered with someone else's itunes acct and you don't have the spotify app "purchased" into THAT person's itunes acct.   Everything keys off the itunes library for these older devices.......  It ALL has to be matchy-matchy or apple/itunes won't let you load the older version.  Just be patient and get everything matchy-matchy and I bet it will work for you!    HOwever,  be warned,  you will want to put everything into playlists!  That is how I get it all to work pretty much glitch-free!   Good lucks!

This is rubbish. We pay for 2 spotiy premium accounts however not all our devices we use are able to have the latest ios software on it. Unless you find a way for us to use our older devices for spotify then it is not worth the money we pay for our premium account!! Please tell me how I can download it for ios 6. Whenever we set up the ipod it says you need ios 7 but he cant get ios 7 on that device. Absolute rubbish spotify. If this isn't fixed then we will cancel our accounts with you.
