iOS app crashing frequently after update

iOS app crashing frequently after update

So I actually don't mind the new UI as much as a lot of people seem to. However... I have noticed that since it updated, the iOS app has become very unreliable for me. Sometimes when I switch between apps and then go back into the Spotify app, or try to play a new song/album/playlist, the entire app freezes and stops working completely. This doesn't happen every time, but it's happening often enough for me where it's a major issue. Anyone else having this problem? I don't want to have to leave Spotify, but honestly it's become virtually unusable for me for its core functionality: playing music.

If it helps, I'm on an iPhone 11, running iOS 14.5.1, and am running the latest version of the iOS app. I already tried doing a full reinstall of the app... it helped for a bit but then the problem returned.

I've also had this problem, however, it was happening every 5 mins or so and the app would take about 30 seconds to load back on. I tried to turn my phone off and on to see if that would fix it and it's been stuck in a boot loop since I decided to do that. I have an iPhone 11 pro max and was running ios 14.5. happened just after I got the new interface.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out about this in the Community!

Could you go into your phone settings and check that Battery Optimization is switched Off for Spotify and that the app is granted all Permissions?

Keep us posted.

There's no battery optimization in iOS and you can only take unrelated rights away from the app like Bluetooth usage.
I'm using an iPhone 7 on iOS 14.5.1, latest version of iOS and Spotify, and when I leave the phone in standby for longer than an hour, the app closes itself. Before the recent iOS update, this never happened, so there must be a new kind of standby mode for apps, even if the are started and in foreground.

Hey @mysticusa1994,

Can you check what happens if you toggle Background App Refresh on/off and see if that makes a difference with the Spotify app.

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, or Off to turn off Background App Refresh entirely.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

I could do that, sure, but wouldn't it rather enlarge the problem?

Hey @mysticusa1994,

Thanks for your reply.

Sometimes when apps get automatically updated, some of their settings can go to new defaults, which can hinder their performance on some devices.

Keep us posted if that changes anything 🙂

I have found this problem too and after trying everything suggested on this forum and tried (uninstalling and redownloading, logging out and back in, clearing the cache etc) and nothing is working, I can’t listen to more than 5 minutes of music whilst on the app or 30 seconds of music outside the app.

Hey @Cameronlothian,

Thanks for the post.

Can you let us know your phone make, model OS version and exact Spotify version.

Also, did you try toggling background app refresh on/off?

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

I just noticed, that I was on iOS 14.5 and am now installing 14.5.1 to exclude the chance of iOS being guilty..

I’m using an iPhone 12 Pro Max running on iOS 14.5 and using Spotify version 8.6.26.1174

i have made sure background refresh settings have been set correct

Hey @Cameronlothian,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Does this happen on any other devices? Also, if you could ask a friend or family member to log in to their account on your device and see if the error comes up there as well- that would help us a lot in narrowing down the root cause. It's a good idea to also make sure that your OS is updated to the latest version available, as some users report 14.5.1 being rolled out.

@mysticusa1994 keep us posted if the update makes a difference!

We'd love to investigate this further and will be keeping an eye out for your replies.

In fact, the iOS or recent Spotify Update seems to have resolved the issue. I haven't had crashes or anything described since.
