iPhone Spotify holds onto downloaded songs even after you deselect them from offline state.

iPhone Spotify holds onto downloaded songs even after you deselect them from offline state.

Hey,

I recently removed half to 70% of my offline songs on Spotify to reduce space used by Spotify however it only removed 200-400MB of usage. This makes little to no sense, as an iOS developer myself I would check how you handle selecting file sizes and removal of files (as I changed my settings for half of my music so the files I deselected for offline was a mixture of sizes) as a first check as it tends to be one user story that is commonly overlooked. But I just thought I'd report it. I attached an image of how much space it's taking to show that half my music is more than half a GB.

Hey @AusBeau, help's here!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention on the Community. To check, how are you removing music that's saved in Offline Mode? Are you just toggling it off of 'Downloaded'? This will still leave it as saved in Your Music, despite taking it out of the offline listening mode.

To completely remove an album or track from your storage, we'd recommend toggling the 'Saved' button, to remove it from Your Music. This will also automatically remove it from your offline tracks.

We hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply @JackS, I can confirm i went through my artists first and then playlists. Unless i should have done it the other way around?

And about the saved button, does that mean removing it completely from my library? I still want to keep a record of my albums and songs, just remove them from offline. While on wifi, I still would like to see my music library in full. I only see the "Download" toggle on artists and playlists, the saved button is rarely there.

As a small bit of feedback, I cannot understand the logic / difference between the download toggle and saved button, shouldn't the download toggle work for the user and not have to press two buttons? particularly if they saved the particular song via the playlist they unsubscribed from. for example, if i had a top 50 charts saved, I don't really expect the app should hold onto the song if it is no longer in the playlist. If i wanted to keep the song, i'd go into the actual song page and save it there too.

I doubt this issue will even be considered for a backlog somewhere but if later on someone actually looks into this issue, here is what the size should be. (I reinstalled the app and downloaded the same playlists as I had after I removed a lot of music from downloaded state). If I had a more knowledge of the internals, I'd create you guys proper user stories but I'm not sure what all the systems behind the scenes are responsible for.
