imported itunes playlists won't play on iphone

I am recently unable to play imported itunes playlists using my iphone (no issues using the desktop Spotify app).    The itunes playlists display and show correct # of songs - but, when I click on a playlist nothing is there.    The itunes playlists are not downloaded/synced to my phone - just the song names.    This has worked fine in the past - just recently stopped working.    I've tried many things to resolve including logging out/back in on Spotify, deleting itunes playlists and re-importing (desktop app), deleting Spotify app and re-installing (iphone).    Any help is greatly appreciated.  This is something I've use a lot in the past with Spotify on my iphone and would like to get working again.
