Does anybody know why I can't connect to the desired device without first physically press play on that device?

IE. Hooking up an Ipad to my receiver via 3,5 mm jack. Then I want to use my xperia z1 to controll the Ipad, Spotifys app says the Ipad is not available. However if I first play a song on the Ipad, it works fine until I pause the music.

Help plz.
