My Question or Issue

Hi to everyone and thanks in advance.

I am living in two neighboring countries dividing my work and living time in both.

I am paying with a credit card from country A but I want to be able to change depending on my mood the country of origin from country A to country B and vice versa, since based on the country/region Spotify bases the new music proposals in the first screen of the app.

Also most probably an issue I am facing with songs becoming unavailable/grey out might have to do with exactly that.

Currently in the web based app the country/region is locked (grey out) in the country that the credit card is (country A) and I cannot change it to the other country upon demand (country B).

How can I change country/region upon demand in order to adjust the country on which the music proposals in the app depend upon? And also to be able to listen music I love but might be blocked/greyed out because the app things I am in an incompatible country for copyright purposes?

Hey @katantona,

Thanks for getting back.

The country of a Premium account has always been defined by the country of the payment method used.

If you'd like to have the country setting updated after a speciifc billing date, you need to update the payment method before that next billing date.

Here's an example:

If you'd like to change your country setting now, and your next billing date is on the 5th, you'll need to update it before the 5th. Otherwise, you'll need to wait another full month until the then next billing date.

Lastly, content availability is dependent on the country of the account and has something to do with permissions from right holders. 🙂

Hey @katantona,

Thanks for coming to the Community.

If that's something you'd like to do, you'd need a payment method for both countries.

Meaning you always have to wait until the next billing date for the country settings to update as mentioned here.

You can also add your vote to this idea, but keep in mind that availability of content is dependent on licenses in each country and therefore cannot be chosen on demand. 🙂

Hope this clears things up!

Hi Maxim,

Thank you for your reply.

If my understanding is correct you propose that after each billing date, I change payment method to the country of which the music suggestions I would like to receive/listen and then when the billing date approaches or/and if I go back to the other country to switch again payment method?

This means that the only way to change country/region on which the music propositions are based is to change payment method since the payment method is linked with a specific country each time and cannot be any different?

So in an extreme example if I was a US citizen but I was residing/working in Russia or UAE for many months a year using my Russian/UAE means of payment (i.e. credit cards) I would be forced to listen to Arab or Russian music propositions or even worse to not be able to listen to US music in case the music in my collection is blocked in said countries (e.g. for copyrighting reasons)?

As is most probably the case and the reasoning for the other issue I am facing with music no longer available?

So you mean that, for example, if I live in Italy but I'm only into Japanese music I'll have to swallow the fact that I can only get Italian music suggestions?

Hey @mwfontes,

While it's not exclusively Italian music, the recommendations are for sure different than for users in Japan.

Feel free to add your support to this idea, though: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-Ideas/Browse-Allow-to-change-Country-Origin-Suggestions/idi-p/... 🙂

That's ridiculous. It's completely impractical. As for payment methods and rights, just update the bill. That a company the size of Spotify cannot come up with a creative way to get content to expats or people who frequently travel abroad is completely beyond me. I don't even access any recommendations anymore just because of that. I have no interest in Brazilian Funk or Sertanejo or Brega. What's wrong with serving me decent recommendations and sending me the bill?

I started to see recommendations of playlists from another country or language. Why?

I am from Poland but I see Latino Rock (Latynoski Rock)
