Separate Spotify & Facebook Accounts

Solved!

Separate Spotify & Facebook Accounts

I just signed up for Spotify and it had to create an account using Facebook... the other link (for just a Spotify account) didn't work.  I do not use my facebook account nor do I want to... just use it to read about my family.  I think I've only commented about 3 times in 3 yrs.  Is there anyway to have an independent Spotify account?

At the moment, no there is not.  As of late last year, the only way to sign up for Spotify is with a Facebook account.  There are currently several suggestions that have been made to change this, but nothing that I am aware of has been planned at this point.  You do not necessarily need to share any of your Spotify activity on Facebook, Spotify only requires it for authentication purposes.

I just started using Spotify and I love it, but...BIG BUT...I don't like mixing authentication credentials!  It is generally considered poor practice to user the same username/password combination for more than one account.  I use Spotify mostly on my phone - without the Music Genome Project recommendations I appreciate from other applications.  I found another application which makes recommendations but also requires access to my Spotify account credentials...which are also my facebook credentials Smiley Frustrated

How about the following:

Use my facebook account credentials to establish the account

&

Allow me to specify a different password unique to Spotify once the Spotify account is created.

That way I can use Spotify without worrying that a crack of facebook creates a vulnerability in my Spotify account...and vice versa.  Smiley Happy

I certainly understand the concern of mixing credentials as you say.  I have some information about the process that may put your mind slightly at ease.  Spotify does not store your Facebook credentials at all.  Once you pass your email/password to Spotify, it hands the authentication details over to Facebook immediately for authentication, using a method called OAuth.  Facebook then returns an authentication token to Spotify which is only good for that particular session.  If that token were to be intercepted by someone else, it would not do them any good.  Additionally, Spotify can only access the portions of your Facebook account that you allow it to.  You can check this by logging into Facebook, going to your Account Settings page, clicking Apps on the left, and then click Spotify.

I realize that this does not lessen the desire to have separate credentials, but hopefully it will set your mind at ease at least a little bit!

I created a spotify account with facebook and then when I installed the app on my ipad I decided to actually read the privacy policy only to findout that when you use your facebook account, Spotify stores your facebook password and a whole bunch of other stuff!

When creating a Spotify account, or connecting your already existing Spotify account with your Facebook account, we will also receive and store the following information about you from Facebook Ireland Limited ("Facebook") your name, user name, password, profile picture, unique Facebook identifier and access token, gender, birthday and email address. In addition, when you use the Spotify Software Application, Spotify Service and Spotify Websites, we will automatically receive information about your use of the application, service and website including information such as media that you access, queries you make, the URL of the website from which you use or access the Spotify Service, date and time of your request, your Internet protocol address, performance of your network and computer, your browser type, language and identifying information, your operating system and application version.

I love spotify, but I also love my information to be private!   If I can't find a way to have spotify without linking it to my facebook I'm going to get rid of it.  I suppose the only other option is to create a 2nd "dummy" facebook account.

Why on earth do they need this information to provide a service?????????

OK, that's it for me. As of tomorrow I will not longer be a Spotify premium member. I don't want to use my FB-credentials to listen to Spotify. WIMP, here I come!

This is one of the reasons why I have always used my original Sptofiy account when signing up to services. I just have a username and password. I am glad about this because I am NOT one of the facebook crowd. I find it evasive and totally useless.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...I want separate passwords AT LEAST for Spotify and Facebook.  Rhapsody is the same price and isn't linked to another personal site.  My husband works web security for a large company and has been pushing me to switch.  Are you even considering this option?

This also prevents sharing an account between multiple family members which Spofity apparently do not want. As others have pointed out the costs of this model become prohibitive as more people in your household use the service, you're better off buying the music from itunes or using another service and sharing the itunes account which is perfectly acceptable.

Im on the free 30 days premium at the moment but the more I read into spotify and find all these restrictions the less appealing it becomes to me. If Im not able to seperate facebook from spotify then I wont be using the service beyond the free period as it just doesnt hold its value.

Why not licence based on authenticated or linked devices to an account and then allow individuals to choose facebook integration on their own device.

This is an old thread, you no longer need a Facebook account to sign up for Spotify. However, if you signed up using a Facebook account while it was needed or afterwards, you can't disconnect. You have to make a new account.

Make an account without Facebook by going to the sign up page and choosing "create an account using your email address". Do NOT press 'register' if you see "we prefilled the form with your facebook details", the actual Spotify account sign up form is different and lets you choose a username. The 'create an account using your email address' link is below the facebook shenanigans.

This is somewhat related, but somewhat not.

I deactivated my facebook (I plan to keep it deactivated for several months due to personal reasons).  But now every time I log in to Spotify, it reactivates my FB profile.  I want to keep the two separate, is there ANY way to do this?

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂

If you created your Spotify account using Facebook, then there is no way to seperate them. If you wish to continue to use that account, you must keep your Facebook account active.

If you wish to migrate to a dedicated (non-Facebook) Spotify account, have a read at my tutorial here.

I honestly don't want to continue paying for this service if I can't at least have separate passwords for each. If someone were to find out my spotify password, they'd have access to all of my Facebook. There's a lot on there and I don't think it's right to put your paying customers at the mercy of an unfortunate mishap :/.

I just deactivated my Facebook account yesterday and when I logged in to Spotify this morning, it reactivated my FB account. I'd like these separate. Any way I could have a Spotify account and keep the FB deactivated?

Hey @kholoodeid ! Welcome to the community 🙂

There is a handy tutorial which will instruct you on how to disconnect from Facebook depending on your account type here 😉
