we (my son and i) want to use spotify simultaneously. why should this not be possible?

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂 

Unfortunately this is not possible. Spotify accounts are licensed for personal usage only, meaning you can only ever have 1 active stream at any given time. So if you both want to listen at the same time, you need an account each.
