Any way to prevent the auto updating?

I have a Redmi Note 3 and for some reason it struggles with newer versions of the spotify app and will crash instantly and close upon opening. As an alternative I downloaded the older APK and installed from there. This worked fine up until a day or two ago. Now despite it never having done so before, spotify will auto update to a new version whenever it is connected to a wifi source even if it is not open in the background. I pay for premium but if there is no way to prevent the auto updating there is no longer any reason for me to stay subscribed. Any ideas? Thanks.

In the Play Store, mark the automatic updates

Yeah in the Play Store turn Off Automatic Updates You'll still see the available app updates but just don't allow Spotify to update
