Cannot download Spotify app on new Android phone

Cannot download Spotify app on new Android phone

My Question or Issue

I recently bought a new phone (moto g32, which apparently runs on Android 12), but in the google play store, the Spotify app displays "Your device isn't compatible with this version". The same message appears when I try going to download from the official page. I checked the page describing how to fix common android issues and searched in the forum and found someone had a similar problem. For them the solution was to go to the official Spotify download page (https://www.spotify.com/it/download/other/ ) and download from there. This did not work for me. It still d splays "Your device isn't compatible with this version", which seems wrong, since the app is supposed to work with Android 5 and above. In the meantime I am currently using my way older phone (bought in 2019) as a "Spotify phone" as if we were still in the era of the iPod. Not ideal!!! And strange that it works there and not on a new device. Thanks for any insights for how to get Spotify to work with my new phone.

+ I recently purchased Google Pixel 7 Pro and immediately updated to Android 14, and now I’m seeing the same thing. I know what you mean.

Hey @GLWDtxt & @BB549,

Thanks for reaching out!

We did some research and it turns out this might actually be an error on Google Play's end.
To see if it would make a difference, follow the steps below:

  1. Delete the data for Google Play Services.
(Go to your device's settings > Applications > Google Play Services > Storage and press the "Clear Data" button)
  2. Delete the data for Google Play Store.
(Go to your device's settings > Applications > Google Play Store > Storage and press the "Clear Data" button)
  3. Restart the Google Play Store.
  4. Agree to the Play Store terms & attempt to download the app.

Hope this helps!
Keep us posted on how things go 🙂

Thanks for this, my pathway is different from what you have written here. I have: Go to your device's settings > Applications > Google Play Services > Storage BUT THEN I have no "clear data" button, only clear storage or clear cache. Should I really clear all the storage?

Hola amigo ya realice estos pasos y no funcionó yo tengo un redmi 8a pro y con actualización de android 11 y me pasa lo mismo que a los demás compañeros.

Had the same problem and finally solved it. Google "Download Spotify APK" and download the file package through a third party on your phone's web browser app (not the Spotify website or Google Play). I did it via Chrome and used a website called uptodown but I think there are others.

The only thing I had to do was update my settings to allow Chrome to install unknown apps.

Hey folks,

Apologies for the lack of updates on our end.

Please note that we wouldn't recommend following the above steps as Spotify can't guarantee the safety and performance of the app if it's not downloaded from an official source.

Since the solution to this problem usually lies within the Google Play Store settings, it's best to clear the Play Store data with the steps mentioned by @Vasil and check the country where the Google Play account was registered.

More troubleshooting steps can be found in this Google support article.

We hope this helps.

I know this is an older thread but I am having the same issue. I am unable to clear storage in the Google Play services. Is there another advice please? I know that the phone is capable of supporting Spotify. It is my old phone that my teenager now uses. It isn't an old Android either. I can't work out how my teenager can listen to Spotify. It's a pain because I pay for the family subscription and she can't use it.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there @Bekm80

Thanks for getting in touch about this and welcome to the Community!

Could you let us know the exact make/model and OS the phone's running? Also, would you mind checking how much available storage space does the phone have? For optimum performance, we recommend having at least 1GB of free memory on your device.

On another note, could you send us a screenshot of what you see when you're trying to download the app? You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert image option in the post editor. Make sure not to send any private info.

We'll be on the lookout.
